The #1 Leadership Thinker Transformed through Receiving

“Embark on a profound transformation! Robb Holman’s latest book ignites curiosity and fosters self-discovery through genuine and selfless receiving.” —Dr. Marshall Goldsmith, Think- ers50 #1 executive coach and New York Times best-selling author of The Earned Life, Triggers, and What Got You Here Won’t Get You There

On my Inside Out Leadership podcast, I’ve had the honor of interviewing some of the world’s greatest inside out leaders. These exceptional individuals hail from various fields such as business, sports, politics, and entertainment. They have consistently demonstrated inspiration, humility, courage, perseverance, and servant leadership. In other words, they are extraordinary givers. Throughout the rest of this book, you will have the opportunity to hear from some of these remarkable leaders.

During these interviews, I have delved into the inner work of each leader and explored how their inner work has contributed to their outer work of influence. One of those interviews was with Marshall Goldsmith, a member of the Thinkers50 Hall of Fame and the number one leadership thinker in the world. What struck me most about this incredibly giving individual was what he shared about the most impactful time of his life— his experience in Africa in 1985 with the Family Relief Campaign.

During that nine-day trip, Marshall accompanied an NBC film crew to witness the global hunger crisis. He shared that it was a profound and sobering experience to see people starving. A picture from that trip, which he included in his book Triggers, captures a line of children and a woman measuring their arms. If their arms were too small, they received no food; they were sent away.

If their arms were too big, they were deemed not hungry enough and also received no food. Only those whose arms were in the middle received nourishment.

Marshall kept that picture as a daily reminder to be grateful for what he had—from what he had received. In his own words, “If someone’s going to improve, it’s only going to come from one place and one place alone—in their heart.” Marshall learned the importance of receiving deeply, and the experience changed him profoundly. It touched him at the core and enabled him to give even more of his heart and success to others. It was a transformation that forever shaped him. It allowed him to understand the profound impact of receiving and how it can fuel our ability to give.

Reflecting on Marshall’s experience of receiving, I am grateful for the reminders in my own life that success is an inside job. Much like Marshall, I have kept pictures that serve as powerful reminders of the importance of staying connected to my inner journey as I navigate the ongoing process of receiving and growing.

And yes, you will come across some of those cherished reminders—pictures and stories of Abdul—woven into the pages of this book.

Reflection

  • Think of the most recent time you opened yourself up to someone who was very different from you. How did you feel? How did you manage to establish a connection with them? What were the results?
