1 Great Book for Your Next-Level AI Read
If you’ve commonly only been reading about Artificial Intelligence — at the surface level, then you most likely want to take this a step further. For me, this was the?Superminds book?by Thomas Malone.
For more than three decades, Thomas Malone has been researching the subtleties, complexity, structures, and patterns of coordination that exist in organisations. He is well-known for his work on coordination science, as well as for related work on cooperation, which has many similarities and overlaps with coordination in a variety of ways. Superminds builds on Thomas’s decades-long professional career of serious academic work, consulting, teaching, and entrepreneurship in this field, bringing together his thinking on these topics and extending them to include new ideas about how interconnected collections of people and collections of computers can come together to achieve levels of intelligence that can exceed the levels of intelligence that can be realised when computers or only humans are used alone.
It's of particular interest to those who are fascinated in both 1) the potential for computing and information technology to increase the intelligence and capability of an organisation (or any purposeful group of people), and 2) how the organisation of work itself must be rethought and realigned in order to realise this potential, respectively.
Superintelligence does not delve into the technical specifics of how advanced information technology or artificial intelligence (AI) works. Tom has done an excellent job of summarising the most important components of this that are necessary for the reasons he makes. This makes the book particularly useful for those working in organisations and other groups (whether in the private or public sectors or in the social sector) who want to read something that will seriously and thoughtfully assist them in understanding and positioning themselves for new possibilities in how group work and large-scale organisational work might evolve in the years to come.
Superminds piqued my interest since it analyses how artificial intelligence and humans may work together to get the greatest results. It was via this book that I learned a new term that I now use all of the time: “collectively.” How can humans and artificial intelligence work together to create a more advanced future for the human and machine race?
Superminds demonstrates that, rather than being afraid of what is to come with artificial intelligence, we should concentrate on what we can do by collaborating with computers, since we can change the world together.
This book shows humanity’s capacity to work together with artificial intelligence.
