1 Article tell the story and reason : Why Graphite Electrodes Break

The reasons for the interruption and cracking of graphite electrodes as carburizing agents in steel production may include the following:

1. High temperature burnout: In the high-temperature environment of steel production, graphite electrodes are subjected to continuous thermal erosion, causing them to gradually become thinner and weaker, ultimately leading to fracture.

2. Mechanical stress: Under the impact of molten metal, graphite electrodes may be subjected to mechanical stress, especially if the electrode has poor contact with the furnace material or molten metal, which may result in uneven stress distribution and lead to electrode fracture.

3. Arc erosion: In an electric arc furnace, the arc between the electrode and the furnace material may cause the electrode surface to melt, gasify, or peel off, thereby reducing the thickness of the electrode and ultimately leading to fracture.

4. Electrode quality issue: If there are defects in the material of graphite electrodes, such as pores, cracks, or impurities, these defects may expand under high temperature and mechanical stress, leading to electrode fracture.

5. Improper electrode size: If the electrode size (such as diameter or length) is not suitable for specific furnace or production conditions, the electrode may fracture due to thermal expansion or mechanical stress.

6. Operating conditions: Inappropriate operating conditions, such as excessively high current settings and inappropriate electrode movement speed, may also lead to premature electrode breakage.

7. Furnace atmosphere: In some cases, the atmosphere inside the furnace (such as oxygen content) may affect the stability and durability of graphite electrodes, leading to electrode fracture.

In order to reduce the risk of graphite electrode fracture, it is necessary to regularly inspect and maintain the electrodes to ensure their quality, and adjust operating parameters appropriately according to production conditions. In addition, selecting appropriate electrode materials and sizes, as well as optimizing furnace operating conditions, can also help extend the service life of graphite electrodes.
