Healthcare organizations and departments, much like people, will benefit from striving toward well-defined and measurable goals.

Clearly defined goals help to guide and measure our success and cause us to:

  • join together to unite around common purposes
  • work proactively to solve problems and make progress
  • be energized, resourceful, and creative, and
  • use or seek out the knowledge and skills needed to succeed.


Employees play important roles in setting and achieving goals.

To start, employees can work together with their leader to set their department’s 2 or 3 annual goals.

When setting goals, great goals are well-defined and focused. We recommend that goals follow the format: “To go from X to Y by WHEN” (which makes it a SMART goal):

A goal “To increase annual clinic visits from 10,000 to 12,000 in the next year” is more meaningful to rally your team than a general desire to “serve more patients.”

After goals are clearly defined and agreed upon, employees can help to determine and carry out the quarterly action steps necessary to achieve the goals.

These are opportunities to bring ideas forward and take teamwork to the next level.

Throughout the year (aka goal period), you’ll also want to keep your sights on the numbers to know if you’re on track to meet the goals and to guide whether you need to consider taking different actions in order to achieve them.

Follow the steps in this goal packet, and know that you are taking steps to make 2024 your best year yet!
