Work-related mental illness including stress, anxiety and depression is the next epidemic disrupting offices around the world. As many as 1 in 4 employees suffer from diagnosable depression due to work-environment factors and 1 in 5 people take time off work due to stress. The particularly difficult and complicated issue is that symptoms of stress, anxiety and depression are cyclical and extend far beyond the four walls of the office.

Keep an eye out for signs of stress, depression and anxiety because when left unattended, these symptoms can rapidly worsen.?

  • Take note of how the people around you are behaving and how you are behaving in relation to them. Offer a hand of support to those in need and do not close yourself off from help. You may notice yourself or others projecting stress onto others. This is not always a sign of general irritability or personality, but often a sign of mental health struggles due to unrelated factors like work-related stress.?
  • Are you struggling with insomnia? A lack of sleep can be caused by inordinate amounts of stress and unfortunately, a lack of sleep can create further stress. The same can be said for bouts of anger, often the response to an outburst leads to further anger and indeed, more stress.?
  • Weight control can be affected too. Some people can see an alarming reduction in weight whilst others might experience an uncontrolled weight gain. This impacts overall health and self-confidence, affecting the psyche further.?
  • Other symptoms like headaches or emotional dysregulation have endless repercussions on general functioning, health and mental wellbeing. The discomfort of headaches can have a ripple effect on multiple factors of wellbeing, while emotional dysregulation can cause havoc on the psyche, again impacting your overall health and wellbeing.

Mental health is something that everyone has to deal with, and as such you should not let the stigma of mental health stop you from receiving the help that you need. If you are already experiencing symptoms of work-related stress, anxiety or depression speak to your boss, and if you feel that you cannot, speak to your doctor for a referral to a registered psychological professional such as a psychiatrist or psychologist.

Leading a healthy and balanced lifestyle can drastically lower your risk of mental health illness. Physical activity relieves stress and has been shown to be effective for the treatment of depression and anxiety on top of its many other health benefits. Engaging in mindfulness programmes can boast tremendous benefits for your mental health and also increase your resilience to psychological torment.

It is important to note that some of your coping mechanisms, though they may keep you on your feet, can be more harmful than helpful. It is never a good idea to sweep things under the carpet, especially your mental health. Speak out, and be realistic with yourself as your mental health can only be maintained and nurtured by you.

Remember, you are not alone.
