2023: ConvertKit's State Of The Creator Economy
How much are creators making on average?
Via a poll of 1,200 of Convertkits users:
"55% of these creators make less than $10,000 annually from their creator business. There is a creator middle class, though. 20% of creators made more than $60,000 last year, and 12% of creators made more than $100,000 from their business last year.
It's worth noting ConvertKit's data is probably skewed more towards the professional newsletter crowd vs the creator economy at large, but there's some interesting nuggets regardless.

WHAT I'M PONDERING
David Perell's essay, ' The Never Ending Now .'
Look at the content you're consuming. How much of it was created within the last 24 hours?
领英推荐
Odds are most of it.
This is the observation Perell made . Dubbing the phenomenon 'The Never Ending Now' (a term I'm now obsessed with).
What do we learn if we're on this endless cycle of what's new?
Are we missing the bigger picture and underlying lessons?
Perell's post is a must read (below is my favorite section):
"The structure of our social media feeds place us in a Never-Ending Now. Like hamsters running on a wheel, we live in an endless cycle of ephemeral content consumption — a merry-go-round that spins faster and faster but barely goes anywhere. Stuck in the fury of the present, we’re swept up in dizzying chaos like leaves in a gale-force wind. Even though on the Internet, we’re just a click away from the greatest authors of all time, from Plato to Tolstoy, we default to novelty instead of timelessness.
We’re trapped in a Never-Ending Now — blind to our place in history, engulfed in the present moment, overwhelmed by the slightest breeze of chaos."
I'M GEEKING OUT ON AI VIDEO...
This channel, Theoretically Media , provides awesome tutorials and overviews of AI photo and video. This one demos the text to video AI platform Pika . Pretty phenomenal stuff and crazy to see.
H/T Jeff MacDonald who first put it on my radar.

I'm going to borrow from Perell here, "How can you prioritize the accumulated wisdom of humanity over the impulses of the past 24 hours?"

1 年Interesting study - fascinating that only 51% of the creators they talked to are going to use AI this year. I wonder when they fielded the study?

1 年I wonder how the email-focused Creator income breakdown compares to other modalities like audio, video, photo.

1 年Nice Brendan. This is a great topic and it caused me to reflect on my own media consumption patterns. In thinking about it, I'm not sure it's limited to social media consumption, however. The cable news phenomenon is similar, yes? There's that pull to wanting to know what's new and happening NOW. I'll have to read the essay later to dig deeper into this.

1 年Great read. Even if was created in the last 24. :) Our reading and consumption habits are not different from how we do life on sutopilot. A click or decision away from depth, we reach for the fluff.
