From "?-1"? to "?+1"?: How Individuals Can Contribute to Ending the Pandemic

From "-1" to "+1": How Individuals Can Contribute to Ending the Pandemic

Norms and standards are fundamental to achieving goals and objectives. Unfortunately, while this discipline is well-known, it is not always well-followed. In many communities or groups, people are often tempted to be the exception, to be the "-1", to take advantage by NOT doing something rather than doing something.

Even during this COVID pandemic, many people persist in being the -1s, who refuse to wear masks or practice social distancing, and even reject taking vaccinations. They adopt the attitude of "if all others vaccinated, then I'm technically immunized, why should I take a shot and risk myself?"

Although individuals may temporarily hold a negative result, it is important to recognize that no one can be definitively classified as a -1. Even in small groups, it is possible for positive cases to emerge suddenly and unexpectedly, as evidenced by a recent incident at the Shenzhen Airport Customs on June 14th. In this case, an individual who worked at the customs was exposed to an incoming passenger who tested positive for COVID-19, and later transmitted the virus to their spouse. This event serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining caution and complying with safety protocols in order to prevent the spread of the virus.

As a result, all communities in the neighborhood had to undergo a seven-day lockdown and three mandatory tests. Despite the authority's efforts, there were still some who were determined to be -1s. Some community members tried to skip the tests deliberately, making the "all negative" objective not 100% accurate, and frustrating the reopening plan.

Their reasoning was, "first, I don't want to show up with the crowd to get tested. Second, I don't think I'm affected, and even if I were, or I will be, the authority would send an ambulance to take care of me. So why take the risk of going out to get tested?" Although their reasoning may seem clever, it is ultimately very selfish.

In the end, it's important to realize that everyone has a role to play in achieving objectives, even during difficult times like the pandemic. We need to work together and follow norms and standards to ensure the safety and well-being of our communities. Only then can we hope to achieve our goals and come out stronger on the other side.

It is encouraging to see that there is a decrease in the number of individuals who are avoiding vaccinations. This decrease could be attributed to the realization that sporadic instances of positive cases can arise at any moment, causing individuals to consider the potential health risks and choose to receive the necessary vaccinations.

Additionally, authorities have implemented measures to address individuals who attempt to avoid testing requirements. For instance, individuals are required to obtain three consecutive negative COVID-19 tests within a period of seven days in order to leave their building. Those who choose to forgo testing and opt out of receiving vaccinations can choose to remain in their domicile until the end of the pandemic.

It is crucial to recognize the significance of taking responsibility for one's health and the health of others during this pandemic. Every individual has the capacity to contribute positively to the end of the pandemic by getting vaccinated and complying with safety protocols. Let us all work together towards becoming +1s and actively strive to combat the pandemic.
