We’re back with another edition of The MIK Museletter, a must-read for industry insights and creative inspiration.

Top Of Mind

When it comes to advertising there are a few occasions bigger than the Super Bowl. With over one hundred million viewers in 2024, brands are willing to dig deep into their marketing budgets to get their message across. Whilst there are always plenty of A-list celebs in front of the camera, this year saw some of them even jump behind it.?

2024 marked Martin Scorsese’s Super Bowl debut, directing “Hello Down There ” for DIY website builder, Squarespace. In true Scorsese style, the spot is humorous, relatable, and effective in communicating the importance of an online presence – even for aliens.?

This leaves us to ask ourselves, could it be better than his 2003 commercial for American Express ? We’ll leave that for you to decide.?

Spotlight On MIK

This week we sat down with our Senior Software Developer, Duncan Matheson.

What do you believe is the key to effective software development??

Understanding the client and delivering working software to satisfy them. It’s not about technical skill, or formal processes, or any of that - you’ve gotta keep your eye on the goal of giving the client something good.

How do you stay updated with the latest trends and technologies in software development??

The annual State of JavaScript survey is a great way of keeping an eye on major upcoming (or declining) technologies. Smashing Magazine has a good mix of dev and design pieces for front-end web developers. Day-to-day, I try to involve myself in the open-source software community of any technology that I’m using, and it’s a great way of hearing about things organically from other like-minded developers.

What’s your proudest moment at MIK?

Working with the Australian Department of Health on projects that have real meaning. My favourite was collaborating with hearing scientists to produce a scientifically based online hearing test. It was technically challenging, got really good engagement, and felt like it had real human value beyond just being a neat website.

What’s got you excited about 2024?

Virtual and Augmented Reality. The Meta Quest 3 and Apple Vision Pro both represent huge jumps forward in the capabilities and mainstream adoption of VR and AR, and I’m excited to see where they go next.
