#012: Debunking 10 Social Media Myths & Why Believing Them Could be Hurting Your Business

This week - I'm pumped (??) to share 10 social media myths that might be holding your business back.

These myths can be really misleading and make it hard for you to quantify the success of your social media efforts. But don't worry, by understanding and tackling these myths head-on, you can create a more effective and efficient social media marketing plan for your business.

So let's get started and take a look at these 10 social media myths that you should stop believing:

Myth 1: Social media is only for young people.

Truth: Did you know that social media usage is increasing among all age groups? Don't assume that your target audience isn't on social media. In fact, according to Pew Research Center, 69% of adults in the US use at least one social media site.

Myth 2: Social media is free marketing.

Truth: While setting up social media accounts is free, achieving success on social media takes time, effort, and often a budget for advertising and other marketing expenses. If you don't have the marketing budget to allocate, consider other marketing channels.

Myth 3: Social media is only for B2C companies.

Truth: Social media is a valuable tool for both B2B and B2C companies. LinkedIn, for example, is a great platform for B2B networking and lead generation.

Myth 4: Social media is a waste of time.

Truth: Social media can be time-consuming, but when used strategically, it can yield significant returns on investment. The key here is to have clear objectives and full business alignment on how social media plays within the wider business strategy.

Myth 5: Social media is all about getting likes and followers.

Truth: While having a large following is desirable, the quality of engagement is more important than the number of followers. It's better to have a smaller following of engaged and loyal customers than a large following of inactive users.

Myth 6: Social media is only about promotion and selling.

Truth: Social media should be used to build relationships with your audience, not just to promote your products or services. Focus on creating value for your followers through helpful content and engagement.

Myth 7: The more followers you have, the better.

Truth: As I mentioned before, the quality of engagement is more important than the number of followers. Having a large following of uninterested or irrelevant users won't benefit your business.

Myth 8: Social media is only for big brands with big budgets.

Truth: Small businesses can benefit just as much from social media as large brands. Social media platforms offer cost-effective advertising options that can be tailored to fit any budget.

Myth 9: Social media is only for tech-savvy people.

Truth: Social media platforms are designed to be user-friendly and accessible to anyone. You don't need to be a tech expert to create and manage social media accounts.

Myth 10: Social media is only about being viral.

Truth: While going viral can be a boom for your business, it's not a sustainable or reliable social media strategy. Focus on building long-term relationships with your audience through consistent engagement and valuable content.

'You can't reuse or repurpose content'. That might have been true a few years back but this shift has been such a game changer for me!
