Showing Up Online
I run a marketing agency (shoutout to Verbatim ), host a podcast, partner with brands, write this newsletter, and, occasionally, hang out with my partner, friends, and dogs.
Balance? Absolutely necessary.
Ever since I started creating content on LinkedIn in 2022, I've been bombarded with advice (like everyone else):
It’s a lot. And regardless of where you're at (working in-house, running a business, trying to partner with brands), showing up online can feel overwhelming sometimes.
I genuinely like LinkedIn (it’s my favorite platform), but that doesn’t mean I want to be glued to it 24/7. I still want to avoid burnout and keep it fun.
Balance is key. So here’s what I’ve learned (and what I stick to):
?? Post On Your Own Terms
I don’t post every day. I take breaks, focus on other things, and come back when I’m ready. If I wake up and don’t feel like posting… I don’t. It’s important to build the habit, but it’s just as important to rest.
For some people, consistency looks like posting 2x/week. For others, 4x/week. For some, it's twice a day. Regardless, what matters is building a system that is sustainable for you and your lifestyle.
Find a rhythm that works for you. Burnout happens when you try to keep up with someone else’s pace—don’t let that be you.
?? Keep What Works. Ignore the Rest.
The algorithm is a fickle friend. Last year, it loved carousels; this year, it’s all about vertical video. Sure, experiment with new formats, but if you don’t vibe with video, no need to force it!
I'm about to start testing out video, and I'm ready to feel awkward and uncomfortable for a while. It's natural, because I'm not used to it! But if 6, 8, 10 months go by and it still feels inauthentic, I'll probably reevaluate.
?? Your Goals, Your Way
Some people want followers, others want leads or revenue. For me? I’m here to network, share what I’m learning, sharpen my skills as a writer, and grow my business. Your goals are your own—don’t let anyone tell you you’re doing it wrong.
If you take nothing else from this, remember: Build an online brand that works for you. LinkedIn can feel like an echo chamber, so stay focused, hone your craft, and only listen to those who’ve been where you want to go—or whose opinions you truly trust.
And keep learning. You've got this!
