  • The Latest Medicare Payment Cuts: At the end of 2024, Congress abandoned the most recent plans to ease 2025 Medicare payment cuts for physicians. This year, physicians are faced with a 2.83% cut to the physician fee schedule's conversion factor. The American Medical Association (AMA) calculates that "Medicare payment rates have fallen by 33% over the past two decades when adjusted for the costs of running a practice."
  • Violence in the Workplace: Physicians faced many challenges over the past year, not least of which was an increase in violence within healthcare settings. In a 2024 poll by the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP), over 90% of emergency physicians said that either they or a colleague were subjected to violence in the workplace within the last year. Consumer dissatisfaction with the U.S. healthcare system and the general political climate are being blamed for these violent trends.
  • Millennial Physician Pay: Medscape recently released the results from an annual compensation survey of 7,000 U.S. physicians. The survey and subsequent report focused on trends in millennial physician pay and found that compensation was up 4% for that age group from 2022 to 2023. Primary care physicians saw the largest increases, but their compensation still lags behind many specialists. A 24% gender pay gap was also calculated from the survey results.

Evan Winter

What if medicine isn’t the only thing you’re passionate about? Being the high-achievers they are, physicians and other professionals usually have interests and hobbies outside of their career field. Often, the desire to learn, grow, and diversify life skills doesn’t end with medical school or training, and you may consider turning one of your hobbies into something more. Here are a few reasons why you should pursue a side gig.

CONTRACTS

Pro Tip: Having multiple job offers provides some of the best leverage in contract negotiations. Being able to walk away, or having a better offer elsewhere, can pressure an employer to at least match or even exceed that alternative offer. When searching for a new job, try your best to have multiple options. You will get a better idea of what is available to you and gain negotiating power.
