#003 First Dutch app launches sale of its own subscriptions

Summer is here, and vacations are just around the corner. However, our apps don't take a break. Designing and developing continue as usual. Regularly updating apps has become more of a business as usual. The goal, of course, is to continuously improve the apps and fix bugs. There is a clear positive effect on user engagement (how often they use the app) and their appreciation for apps that regularly release new versions. The sweet spot tends to be around 2 to 3 weeks, although it varies depending on the type of app.

One eye-catching update from last week is the RD News app. As far as I know, it's the first Dutch app to take advantage of Apple's opportunity to sell its own subscriptions. I wrote an in-depth article about it.

In this newsletter, you'll also find an interesting piece from our designer Ron about involving end users during the design and development process, a fun report from the annual NNP day where we, of course, participated with our Media Apps, and finally, a how-to-ai video for those who want to dive into Midjourney themselves.

Enjoy reading,

Tim

Erdee Media Group launched an update to the RD News app

Erdee Media Group started selling subscriptions in its app this week (and yes, that's quite special)

This week, the Erdee Media Group launched an update to the RD News app. With this new version, users can subscribe to digital subscriptions to RD through the app to gain access to all paid articles. You sign up for this subscription with RD itself. And that is, as crazy as it sounds, quite special. Because until recently, this was not allowed by Apple. How did that come about? Should we be happy with this new opportunity? And how will policy around in-app purchases evolve? Read about this and more in this article.

The news app for all local weekly newspapers. How's that?

On a radiant Wednesday in the warm June summer month, a large number of local publishers gathered at the annual day of the industry association 'Nederlandse Nieuwsblad Pers' (NNP) at the beautiful rural outdoor location of Kameryck in Kamerik. Not only for the annual meeting, but also to speak to other publishers and share experiences. Just like last year, Pinch Media Apps was present all day as a Friend of the NNP.

We were also present last year. Because at that time we were able to tell publishers with enthusiasm that we were going to develop an A-class news app for all local publishers connected to the Pubble Platform. Based on the app of the Nederlands Dagblad. A promise is a promise. What happened to those plans?
