#001: F*ck Around & Find Out

#001: F*ck Around & Find Out

My best mate's name is Marco Augusto. We've known one another for 10 years now. We met about the same time I began writing copy.

He's an inspiration to me. He is one of the top health and fitness coaches in the world for people over 35 years old. And you've likely never heard of him.

For 8 years now he has been changing the lives of humans in our small city of Newcastle, Australia - without a care in the world for being a household name.

He values true, deep, real human connection and changing the lives of those he touches over anything else.

We have a mantra we created and both live by - fuck around and find out.

It helps us to take immediate action on ideas that pull us.

.. and that's exactly what I am doing here with this LinkedIn Newsletter.

(side note: I urge you to "fuck around and fint out" in your own life - this is a core belief system and behaviour of the high-performing humans I've been blessed to spend time with in life)

Over the last 10 years of writing copy, creating freedom in my life, and generating $500M+ for clients I have made millions of mistakes and gotten a handful of things right.

I've come to understand myself to a level where I know, with certainty, that it is my mission to build the greatest copywriting experience and community of the 21st century. My vision is one where I have mentored and supported 100,000 “copypreneurs” who work when they want, where they want, with who they want, and charge what they want.

Copy OS, CopyLaunch, and CopyHaus are the vehicles that will drive the success of creating that reality.

I'm not here to fuck around for long ... I want to provide insane amounts of value to the copywriters who honour me with their attention.

So, my promise to you, is I am going to share information here you will not find anywhere else for free on the internet that is going to help you:

  • Charge premium rates ($5,000+)
  • Attract clients happy to pay those premum prices
  • Write top-tier copy, fast
  • Understand "The Business of Copywriting"

... so you can add an extra $100,000+ in annual recurring revenue to your copywriting business or career.

Let's dive in.

How to actually get rich as a copywriter (the 7 essentials needed):

  1. Position Yourself In A Category Of One

Leverage is created by becoming THE copywriter who writes a specific kind of copy, for a hyper-specific type of person/company, in a specific industry

  • Choose A Copy Asset
  • Choose An Industry
  • Choose A Niche
  • Choose A Sub Niche

Example: I write advertising copy (asset) for property (industry) coaches (niche) who teach people how to invest in property (sub niche)

2. Be The Expert In A Specific Industry, Niche & Sub Niche

Strive to understand these things better than you understand almost anything else.

All the usual things like pains, problems, desires, dream outcomes, etc ...

But also:

  • The current state of the industry
  • The current market sentiment
  • The pains, problems, desires, dream outcomes, etc of their ideal clients
  • The types of offers they use, why they work and why they don't

This helps you to position yourself even more strongly as THE GO-TO copywriter in that space for that specific kind of asset

3. Create Your Banger Offer

Make it irresistible for your industry, niche, and sub-niche

Alex Hormozi's $100M Offer Template is the perfect thing to use here. Don't reinvent the wheel - use what works.

4. Create Leverage Via Pricing

Set your models up so you're charging per project instead of per hour. Focus on the value you're creating for clients instead of the work you're doing.

As a copywriter, you do not want to trade your time for money - you want to earn non-linearly

The value you can create for a client from just one hour of work is tremendous.

You want to leverage your skill as a copywriter (an asset) as much as possible as your inputs (time spent writing) do not match your outputs

Do this by charging in one of four ways:

(a) Per Project

Base this around the value you're creating for the client.

  • Study their current conversion rate
  • Work out revenue based off X traffic and the cost of X traffic
  • Work out the new revenue if you increased conversions or dropped the cost of traffic

Example: They convert 5% of visitors to a $1,000 offer and spend $500 to get 100 people to the site. If you got 100 people to the site for $250 you'd double their revenue. If you also improved conversion rate to 10%, you'd improve it even more. Charging $5k is now justifiable.

(b) Higher Per Project w/ Small Commission

Do the same as above, but charge a higher per project rate with a small commission on the back end

  • Client takes on more up front risk
  • You limit back-end revenue
  • Gives you both up-front and back-end revenue

Example: You charge the same client $5k and 5% of sales in the next 30 days. If the client converts 10% of 1,000 visitors in that time, your commission is 5% of $100,000 - $5,000. You received a total of $10,000 for the sales page copy.

(c) Low Per Project w/ High Commission

Do the same as above, but charge a smaller per project rate with a small commission on the back end

  • Client takes on less up front risk
  • You own more leverage
  • Gives you both up-front and back-end revenue

Example: You charge the same client $3k and 10% of sales in the next 30 days. If the client converts 10% of 1,000 visitors in that time, your commission is 5% of $100,000 - $10,000. You received a total of $13,000 for the sales page copy.

(d) Commission Only

Do the same as above, but only charge the client a high commission of sales over a span of 30 to 90 days

  • Client takes on ZERO risk
  • Very high risk for you
  • Very high reward for you

Example: You charge the same client 15% of sales in the next 90 days. If the client converts 10% of 3,000 visitors in that time, your commission is 15% of $300,000 - $45,000. You received a total of $45,000 for the sales page copy.

5. Build A Copywriter Specific Client Acquisition Model

Your ideal clients don't care about copy - they care about the result for them.

Break your audience down into RENTED (social), OWNED (list), and MONETISED (audience).

Create social content, funnels, ads, and connections specifically for each of these three audiences.

The goal is to move people from rented, to owned, to monetised.

You do this by creating specific marketing assets for each stage of awareness:

  • Unaware (rented)
  • Problem Aware (rented)
  • Solution Aware (rented/owned)
  • Product Aware (owned)
  • Most Aware (owned)

After they buy, they become your monetised audience and your attention turns to building a systems that gets them to be retained and to refer.

6. Sales

Selling as a copywriter is easy when:

  • you're positioned as THE expert in a copy asset for a hyper-specific type of person/company, in a specific industry
  • you frame your offer around the value created
  • you align the pricing proposed with the clients best interests

7. Deliver

Now, you write your copy and deliver it to the client. Over delivery here can be either (a) the copy performs better than expected, or (b) you deliver it faster than expected

The greatest lever to pull here is your time by writing write top-tier copy, fast.

The best way I've found to do this is using proven systems, templates, and frameworks for researching and writing specific copy assets.

Over 10 years I've tweaked and optimised my own and I can know write top-tier copy in days, hours, and minutes.

This has allowed me to:

  • Write a sales email in 30min that generated $220k+ for a client
  • Write ads in minutes that have turned $120k spend to $6.2M in revenue
  • Write copy for entire launches in two weeks that generated $300k+
  • Write sales page copy in a day that would do $10k+ in sales, daily

Because of this efficiency and effectiveness, I can bang out better copy, faster - letting me leverage my time, skill, and value I create for people as a copywriter, better

Play a better game. Play it longer-term. Play it with better people.

That's how you charge premium prices as a copywriter, attract clients who are happy to pay it, and over deliver - a.k.a create wealth (...or "get rich") as a copywriter.

Thank you for being here with me. It is my intent to publish one of these newsletters weekly and fill it with immense value for the copywriters of the world.

Let's win together,

Nick
