At Stanford, Jim Barron and Mike Hannon conducted research on company culture.

They demonstrate that firms whose founders state "culture first is my top priority" have a significantly lower failure rate.

In the study, approximately 200 startups were examined, and the failure rate for culture-fit firms was zero percent.

Not only were they less likely to fail, but they were also more likely to go IPO, and it's easy to see why.

When a company prioritizes its culture, everyone shares the same values, believes in the same mission, and is uniquely motivated because they have nowhere else they have a sense of belonging than at their current company.

Consequently, they accomplish great things. To save the company, they are therefore willing to do whatever it takes, exceed job requirements, and be as result-driven as possible.

How to hire for culture?

Scientists looked at operating data from 207 large US companies in 22 industries across 11 years and compared the results of companies that actively managed their cultures versus those that did not.

Here's what they found.

  1. Companies that managed culture well increased their stock prices by 901% versus 74% for those that did not.
  2. Culture-focused companies increased their revenue over the 11-year period by 682% versus 166%.
  3. Net income also saw a major bump, an increase of 756% for companies that managed culture well versus 1% for companies that didn't.?
