  • Developing Leaders with Experiential Learning, the USNA-Way The mission of the Stockdale Center for Ethical Leadership at the United States Naval Academy is to empower leaders to make courageous, ethical decisions. The Center, serving as a "beacon to the nation," influences key figures at the Academy and shares its lessons with leaders across the country. Celeste Raver, PhD, the Timothy and Susanne Sullivan Director of Influencer Development at the Stockdale Center, posed the question, “How can we scale experiential learning to help leaders intentionally learn from every experience?” This initiative aimed to expand the role of experiential learning at the Academy. Twelve prominent leaders at the U.S. Naval Academy engaged in an in-depth exploration of experiential learning, becoming champions of this approach and its expansion within the Academy. Their participation in the Custom Experiential Learning Certificate Program was instrumental in making it a remarkable success. These leaders will continue to enhance and integrate the Academy's experiential learning initiatives, influencing future leaders, learners, collaborators, and educators. As the Academy fosters leaders who intentionally learn from every experience, the benefits will be far-reaching. Thank you to Celeste Raver, PhD for the inspired leadership and to this remarkable group of influencers for the opportunity to learn and grow together. Effective decision-making is crucial, both in personal contexts and in leadership roles. At the Institute for Experiential Learning, we emphasize the power of the Experiential Learning Cycle to enhance decision-making processes. By mapping decisions across the nine Learning Styles within the cycle, leaders and individuals gain comprehensive insights that can help improve outcomes and foster an adaptable leadership approach. Here’s how ?? 1.Experiencing: Engage directly with current realities and emotions. 2.Imagining: Generate a broad range of possibilities and potential solutions. 3.Reflecting: Delve into gathered information to understand deeper implications. 4.Analyzing: Systematize insights to develop actionable plans. 5.Thinking: Apply logical analysis to draw conclusions. 6.Deciding: Commit to a well-defined course of action. 7.Acting: Execute decisions and observe the outcomes. 8.Initiating: Modify actions based on feedback to improve continuously. 9.Balancing: Adapt and refine strategies to address emerging challenges. This approach not only sharpens individual judgment but also enhances a leader’s ability to guide teams through complex decision landscapes, building flexibility and resilience. ?? Is decision-making a skill you want to continue to develop? If so, join us for our upcoming pilot program: ELevate Application Guide, ELevate Decision-Making. This new resource will help you apply Experiential Learning to your decision-making to make more informed, effective decisions. Stepping into a leadership role for the first time presents a unique set of challenges and opportunities. For new managers, navigating decision-making, building trust, and driving high performance can often feel daunting. At the Institute for Experiential Learning, we believe that Experiential Learning is a critical tool that first-time leaders can rely on to thrive in these roles. ?? Understanding the Learning Cycle: Experiential Learning revolves around the continuous cycle of Experiencing, Reflecting, Thinking, and Acting. By engaging in this cycle, new leaders can approach challenges with a structured method that promotes better outcomes. It's not just about making decisions but making informed decisions that are reflective of the team's insights and the leader’s understanding. ?? Promoting Learning Flexibility: Every team member has a unique style of interaction and expectation from their leaders. First-time managers must recognize their primary Learning Style but also develop the ability to flex into other Learning Styles to effectively engage each team member. This flexibility enhances their capability to build trust and influence across diverse team dynamics. ?? Driving Decision-Making: Decision-making is particularly critical. By applying the principles of Experiential Learning, new leaders can develop a nuanced approach to decision-making that incorporates real-time learning from direct experiences, reflection on these experiences, strategic thinking, and prompt action. Experiential Learning equips first-time managers not only to survive but to excel in their new roles by turning everyday challenges into opportunities for growth and development. It ensures that leaders are not just reacting to situations but proactively shaping their approach in alignment with their team’s needs and organizational goals. We'd love to hear from you! What were some of the challenges you faced as a first-time leader, and how did you overcome them? Share your stories and insights in the comments below ??

The structure of learning spaces is crucial in education and professional development. At the Institute for Experiential Learning, we prioritize creating spaces that actively engage learners, ensuring they are not mere bystanders in their learning journey. What’s In ? →Encouraging group discussions and shared problem-solving to enhance learning through diverse perspectives. →Fostering a culture where asking questions is not only welcomed but essential for deeper understanding and critical thinking. →Enabling learners to apply concepts in real-time through practical exercises that reinforce the Learning Cycle. What’s Out ? →Moving away from traditional lecture-based formats where participants passively receive information without active engagement. →Discarding models that restrict learners from testing and experimenting with new knowledge in a safe environment. →Avoiding scenarios where learners work in silos, missing opportunities for cross-pollination of ideas and peer learning. To truly understand the impact of well-crafted learning environments, we invite you to explore our range of programs where these principles are brought to life. Each program is designed to navigate participants through the full Learning Cycle—Experiencing, Reflecting, Thinking, and Acting—making every learning moment active and impactful.
