Confronting Conflict with Confidence
Last week I had the privilege of attending Sacramento Regional Builders Exchange's first ?????????? ???? ???????????????????????? workshop of the year: Confronting Conflict with Confidence, facilitated by Audrey Ayers, Ph.D. and Margie Johnson, Ph.D.
The part of the workshop that I found most insightful demonstrated, in a visible, tangible way, how different people confront conflict.
Margie represented conflict in the workplace. She stood still in one part of the room and Audrey asked us to stand anywhere in the room that represented how we deal with conflict in the workplace.
In other words, our physical proximity to Margie, our body language, our positioning, was a physical representation of how each of us felt about personally dealing with conflict in the workplace.
People positioned themselves all around: one woman stood behind a white board to hide; one woman stood at a 45 degree angle to Margie, several women retreated to the furthest corners of the room.
As a construction litigator, I stood shoulder-to-shoulder with Margie, with our shoulders literally touching, facing the same direction.
Then came the insight: Audrey had each one of us explain WHY we positioned ourselves the way we did. And holy moly. ??
This exercise eviscerated our preconceived notions about WHY people handle conflict differently than we do. There is no one way, no right way, no only way.
There are just different styles.
And me?
Well, I stood where I stood because when I am litigating construction disputes on behalf of my clients, I prefer to partner WITH the conflict. I have the privilege of being removed from the emotionality of the conflict (most of the time, anyway), which allows me to confront the conflict in a way that may lead to creative solutions, which means better outcomes for everyone.
By anticipating potential conflicts and understanding the diverse conflict resolution styles, we can devise strategies that not only mitigate risks but also foster a more collaborative and resilient project environment. This approach not only prepares us to handle disputes more effectively but also lays the groundwork for innovative solutions that address underlying concerns before they escalate, ensuring smoother project execution and enhanced stakeholder satisfaction.

In the tree world, risk is based on time/exposure. Likelihood of tree failure looks a lot different when viewing over a period of 3 months as opposed to 100 years! Constant revaluation is an important dynamic for making a meaningful evaluation of risk.
