The offshore energy industry has had another busy week, with oil and gas players disclosing updates on ongoing projects and offshore drillers revealing new rig assignments. As the quarterly results season is in full swing, more companies have reported their performance for 4Q and the full year 2023.

Engaged in a quest to strengthen energy security and accelerate decarbonization, エニ recently boosted its natural gas and LNG portfolio with the acquisition of Neptune Energy ’s business. The Italian giant is the last in the line of European and U.S. oil majors, which posted a steep fall in profits for 4Q and the full year 2023 due to the downward trend in oil and gas prices. The company’s adjusted net profit attributable to its shareholders was €8.3 billion (nearly $8.94 billion) for the full year 2023, a drop of 38% compared with €13.3 billion (almost $14.33 billion) during the full year 2022.
On the other hand,?Shell,?Chevron, ExxonMobil,?BP, and TotalEnergies reported profits of $28 billion in 2023 compared to $39.9 billion in 2022; $21.37 billion last year versus $35.5 billion in 2022; $36 billion in 2023 in comparison with $55.7 billion from the year before; $13.8 billion in 2023 compared with $27.7 billion in 2022; and $21.4 billion in 2023 versus $20.5 billion in 2022, respectively.
With a batch of new assignments for its rig fleet in the bag, Transocean tucked a $3.2 billion boost in contract backlog under its belt during 2023, thanks to the upturn in the offshore drilling market propping up higher day rates and fleet utilization.

With the energy transition push becoming more pronounced, Solstad Offshore ASA , just like its shipping and maritime peers, is looking into ways to future-proof its fleet. To this end, the firm recently joined forces with Pon Power Norway and Caterpillar Marine to scale up fuel efficiency across its offshore support vessels (OSVs) and curb its GHG emissions while working on advancing the use of methanol-powered solutions for these ships.
On the other hand, Labour’s new plan to extend the windfall tax on UK oil and gas producers, if elected to government, could put 42,000 jobs and ￡26 billion of economic value in jeopardy, based on Offshore Energies UK's data. This is not the first time that Labour’s proposals have come under heavy fire from Britain’s oil and gas industry, as the party faced a barrage of criticism last year over its?plans to ban all new oil and gas developments?in the North Sea.?

In addition, Labour has made a U-turn on its green pledge by deciding to scrap its policy of spending ￡28 billion a year on green investments. For Global Witness, this is a letdown in the fight against the climate crisis.
Recently, North Sea Transition Authority held a workshop on platform electrification to assist the industry in unlocking brownfield projects to enable existing platforms to run on clean electricity. This workshop, which was attended by 11 major operators on the UK Continental Shelf (UKCS) and 10 technology suppliers, provided a platform to discuss technical solutions to bolster investment in the electrification of existing assets in a drive to slash oil and gas production emissions in the North Sea.
The UK government is currently engaged in a court battle with environmental and climate groups - ClientEarth , Good Law Project , and Friends of the Earth - for the second time in under two years over its net zero plans and strategy for tackling climate change.

Valaris Limited has secured a series of new contracts and extensions across multiple geographies for three floaters and six jack-ups in its rig fleet. These deals were secured with Petrobras , Equinor , Harbour Energy , TotalEnergies , 壳牌 , Ithaca Energy , エニ , and Anadarko Petroleum Corporation , a wholly-owned subsidiary of Oxy .
Dolphin Drilling has announced the beginning of operations and the final transfer of ownership for two semi-submersible rigs acquired from Transocean, which effectively expands the firm's rig fleet and opens doors to new opportunities not just in the UK but also elsewhere.
Eni and TotalEnergies are planning to undertake a full evaluation of the hydrocarbon resources in a gas discovery offshore Cyprus to pick the right development solution for this project and ramp up the supply of gas to the region and Europe.
Transocean has confirmed the award of an assignment in the Black Sea for one of its semi-submersible rigs, a contract extension in Angola for one of the drillships in its floater rig fleet, and a new assignment for another drillship in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico.

SBM Offshore has confirmed that an FPSO, which will work on 埃克森美孚 ’s fourth oil project in the Stabroek block offshore Guyana, recently left drydock and arrived along the quayside at the Seatrium yard in Singapore.
The delivery of the first Pluto Train 2 modules is perceived to be a key milestone towards the delivery of a giant natural gas project, which would help meet the growing demand for “the low-cost, lower-carbon, reliable energy the world needs today and into the future,” according to Woodside Energy 's CEO. The first LNG cargo from the Scarborough project is still slated for 2026.
Meg O’Neill, Woodside Energy's CEO, highlighted: “The safe and timely arrival of the module is testament to the hard work and dedication of the Woodside team and our lead contractor 柏克德 . With the Scarborough Energy Project sitting at more than 55% complete, we are making significant progress across all scopes of work and look forward to receiving the remaining modules on site throughout 2024.”

bp and ADNOC Group have taken their long-standing partnership to a new level by opting to create a new joint venture (JV), which will initially focus on the development of gas assets in Egypt.

This interview also discusses the Biden administration's recently announced temporary LNG permitting pause, which was made to review the environmental and economic impacts of LNG export facilities to non-Free Trade Agreement (FTA) countries.
