Journey through the heart of Karnataka as we explore the vibrant tapestry of cultures and languages that define this diverse state. Our festival, “Krishna to Kaveri,” draws inspiration from the mighty rivers that cradle Karnataka’s landscapes, communities, and experiences.

Just as the Krishna and Kaveri rivers traverse geographies, our festival aims to bridge the myriad cultures and languages of Karnataka. These life-giving waters serve as a powerful metaphor for the state’s expansive terrain, rich diversity, and syncretic nature.

Taking our cue from the rejuvenating powers of these sacred rivers, our event curation focuses on revival and revitalisation. We aim to breathe new life into traditional art forms, customs, and practices, ensuring their relevance in contemporary times.

Join us for two days of immersive experiences as we celebrate the essence of Karnataka – a land where cultures converge and flourish, much like the rivers that shape its identity.

The Chittara Mural artform, established by the Deevaru Community, is a traditional phenomenon that involves intricate stories and geometric patterns. These murals were traditionally painted on house walls during auspicious occasions, welcoming deities during festivals and ceremonies. In his presentation “The Art of Foraging: A Living Heritage,” Suresh Kumar G explores the deep-rooted traditions of foraging in local communities, particularly focusing on the Sarjapur region. Through his research and community engagement, he documents how traditional knowledge of wild edibles has been passed down through generations, primarily by women elders. The presentation highlights the scientific basis behind seasonal foraging practices and their crucial role in maintaining biodiversity. Kumar emphasizes how urbanization threatens both the foraging grounds and this ancestral knowledge, while also discussing his “Sarjapur Curries” project, which works to preserve and document these practices for future generations. His work bridges traditional ecological knowledge with contemporary food security concerns, demonstrating the continued relevance of foraging practices in modern times.

Workshop on Kawand Quilt Making |????? ????? ???????? ?????????

Led by Girija Siddhi, this workshop is an experience of Siddhi cultural heritage through patchwork quilting made from pieces of old cloth or worn-out clothing. The traditional Kawand is a hand-stitched quilt, made from scrap fabric, including old saris. This style of quilt-making involves working from the outside into the centre. The size of the quilt is dictated by the size of the backing and batting, as it is appliqued and quilted at the same time.

This presentation describes the diverse food culture of the state, as represented in its main cuisines of the regional, ethnic and religious communities in Karnataka. Some of the well-known cuisines are the Uttara Karnataka Cuisine, the Udupi Coastal Cuisine, Kodava Cuisine, Catholic Mangalorean Cuisine and Nawayathi Muslim Cuisine.? This does not preclude many other cuisines, which often overlap, having common geographies and food habits.
