About 33 years ago from now, in my primary school (Abu Ubaida Amer bin Al-Jarrah), the only government school that owns a (planted) playground, at least in the south of the city, in the Manfuha neighborhood, in the capital, Riyadh, in the primary grades.

I was always chosen as captain of the soccer team (and I don't know why), perhaps because I was larger than the rest of the students, or the administration saw something I didn't know about.

At that time, the leader or (captain) had to choose the members of his team from a long line that included the players (students). Of course, I chose (my friends) and excluded those I hated. I was led by childhood feelings and mentality at the age of eight or nine.

However, we were always defeated at the beginning of the league or in the middle, and we were unable to qualify for the advanced rounds or the regional schools league (states).

I was just looking for fun, keeping my friends by my side, and pleasing them by staying on the player list.

I did not understand all the successes and honors received by the successful team, which represented the school in local competitions, and some of whom had already been chosen to register in major football clubs.

I was surprised at the time that the gym class teacher was blaming me alone for my team’s failures!!

When I objected, he would say: You chose the team and you are its leader.

Guess what ?

Later, my friends (who are not good in playing football), whom I complimented, turned against me.

They began (evaluating) my skills and belittling them.

In response, I really hated being a leader and avoided the spotlight.

But that did not last long and it did not succeed either. Sometimes I was forced to choose and other times I automatically took the lead without realizing it or I simply forgot my decision.

I realized (in the following year) that choosing a good team is the starting point. Everyone, especially my friends, was shocked when I did not choose them.

I have faced enormous (social) pressure and (significant) bullying, which sometimes reached (childish fights) because of what my friends claim that I have (betrayed) them.

I was not avoiding that either, I was frank and harsh in confronting them with the real reason for our loss of the league last year.

They were becoming more stubborn and more determined.

I used to remember every time how I (as a leader) am the only one to blame for success or failure, and I have to do something about it and find solutions.

That year, I carefully chose my team according to new criteria, and I discovered that no one had chosen (my friends) to play at all, because I was the only one who chose them!

After that, I saw:

* How (distinguished players) leaders compete to attract.

* There are really good players who need a leader who pushes them to show more of their amazingness.

* There is an excellent player, but he is arrogant and rebellious. He needs a leader to control his settings without destroying him.

* There is a player who (shows) an active effort in the group (only when I arrive) without active participation, and he tries to hide it by getting close to me, making up stories, or belittling others.

* There is a player who hates me (because of jealousy or because of racism) because he thinks he is more worthy than me. I did not reciprocate that. I involved him in making decisions and gave him some tasks to train players on penalty kicks. He was very happy and became a close friend.

* The fat son of the school principal, whom his father forced into our team, we made him the goalkeeper initially. I later discovered that (each box) in the team is very important in determining the result.

We convinced (he), not (his father), to stop playing football and to be the president of the (supporters’ association) as a supporting role and prepare the flags and slogans only, and all parties were happy.

We won the league that year, and defeated (the teachers’ team) in the friendly match the following year as the biggest local achievement.
