The Age of Adelaide

This Hijri year, praise be to God, I have finally completed sixty years.

Many of us in our Arab society, as women or female workers or employees in general, do not like to mention or announce our age. They actually think that saying their true age will in no doubt reduce their working continuity or reduce the possibility in obtaining a position or job, or become included in the list of retired consultants, or something of the like, as if they have become disabled machines, wreckage or remains.

This opinion comes from the fear of being judged by the same society we live in as it condemns these retired persons and places them on this metaphoric shelf until the time of they meet their fate or their doom day whichever comes first, ruling that without knowing the persons or their actual conditions especially when it comes to achievement and performance, etc., thus mentioning the age of any adult in our Arab environment is not desirable at all.

These mind establishments may be unrealistic and harsh, stemming from a lack of understanding, ignorance, asserting or alleging what is not truly binding on these retired employees. They often have no basis, as I know many countries internationally and in the Arab world extend the practical retirement age to the age of sixty-five, due to the need for the experiences, the abilities, and the performance potential of these employees. Some companies keep their employees after retirement because they are useful to the place, position, or work. They might give them the initiative to train other employees, younger ones, to create second and third liners. They transfer their knowledge to those who don’t know much about work conditions & other elements.

On the other hand, we also find that some companies in different Arab countries may establish work policies regarding the employment of male and female employees after a certain age, giving the excuse of physical incapability, performance limitations, and other disability pretext. They can go further in saying that older age may hinder their practical capabilities and make them less capable of movement, thus become inactive, and thus assume their inability to perform. Furthermore, the judgement viewpoint that these individuals may face from their colleagues or society who consider them to have exceeded their expiry date or surpassed the supposed authority to work, which leads them to retirement and accelerates their dismissal from work in any case.

Unfortunately, we may find that young employees, or those wishing to work, or those starting out in the labor market look at this age group in a way that is psychologically translated into hatred, pity, anger, or astonishment, especially in our Arab societies, because the concept of retirement age is unclear and undesirable in general. In fact, sometimes it may be a well-known custom that does not follow the labor law at all.

?I mention here an example where while working in one of the Arab countries (when I was much younger :), It was a major big international yet private company where a known policy was determined for the age of employees thus some were on payroll and on employment with ages exceeding seventy-five years or more. Honestly, I was eager to meet those work forces in this unique situation, as I wanted to learn about them, to get to know them, and to try to understand the circumstances that prompted them to continue working even after their retirement age as per the country labor law. I had a sincere desire to know the practical direction of the senior management of this employee, or to deal with the matter according to top management. In fact, I found that some of the employees who were over sixty and sixty-five years old had the ability and competence that the younger ones lacked, keeping in mind that I conducted very precise performance tests to reveal their scientific, practical and behavioral skills. As for the low-performing group, the decision of top management was implemented, their work within the company must be settled, and they must be laid off according to the Human Resources, Labor, and Workers Law in that country.

?Truth be told, I am not reviewing here my achievements during my years of work and life, quite the opposite. I have decided to retire at the age of fifty-five and abandon field work in my specialization yet my employment under any administration was self-inflicted. It is my desire to be independent, Do what I want and like, have personal freedom, and do solitary work, where I am not subject to any law except the law of self. I put into consideration that I will work in what makes my body comfortable first, my mind second, and then my pocket third.

This concludes in my singular opinion that the desire to work after retirement depends on the person in question. One should be prepared and decide on continuing work or become independent. One should ask self after all these years of continuous work; will I remain a productive member of this society? Will I be a committed person, will I be able to achieve and continue to do so? Answering these questions will put one under scrutiny for one is obligated towards oneself only to live a fulfilling life till last drop. ?
