On November 29, 2024, I had the honor of participating in the 7th edition of the National Forum for Environmental and Climate Justice, held under the theme: *"Environmental Rights in the Face of Climate Change." Our Mission Was Clear: To find sustainable solutions to Tunisia’s growing environmental challenges amidst a global context marked by increasing inequalities between the Global North and South and the emergence of new forms of environmental colonialism. These dynamics exploit natural resources unjustly, neglect environmental commitments, and undermine the sovereignty of nations over their resources. Over the two days of the forum, we engaged in meaningful discussions on critical issues such as: - The right to water, addressing scarcity and overexploitation of water resources. - Food sovereignty, in the face of growing dependency and unsustainable agricultural investments. - Protecting vulnerable ecosystems such as forests, oases, and wetlands, which are under threat from climate change and human activity. - Energy justice and ensuring a fair energy transition amidst emerging projects like green hydrogen. - Environmental activists' rights and the need to equip them with legal tools to defend their causes. Key Recommendations From the Forum:1?? Water Resources Management: - Advocating for fair and sustainable water policies that guarantee access to water for all, including modernizing distribution networks, preventing illegal exploitation, and utilizing unconventional water sources. - Establishing a sovereign ministry dedicated to water management and ensuring transparency while promoting civil society participation. 2?? Agriculture and Food Sovereignty: - Revising agricultural policies to prioritize the cultivation of strategic crops, protect farmers' rights, and raise awareness of the importance of preserving local seeds - Promoting sustainable farming techniques and strengthening agricultural guidance to empower small-scale farmers in addressing climate change impacts. 3?? Protecting Vulnerable Ecosystems: - Enacting specific laws to protect oases, forests, and wetlands, while involving local communities in decision-making processes. - Halting harmful practices like pollution and illegal landfills in these ecosystems, and highlighting their role in climate change adaptation. 4??Energy Justice and Fair Energy Transition: - Rejecting the privatization of agricultural lands for renewable energy projects benefiting foreign investors and promoting sustainable, locally managed energy solutions. - Raising community awareness about risks associated with projects like green hydrogen and emphasizing the public ownership of the energy sector. 5??Legal Framework for Environmental Rights: - Incorporating environmental law into training programs for judges, lawyers, and state agents to ensure more effective justice in environmental cases. - Creating platforms to support activists, document environmental violations, and facilitate collaboration between associations and rights organizations.With commitment and determination, we can lay the foundations for environmental and climate justice that meet the aspirations of current and future generations. I encourage all those concerned with environmental issues in Tunisia and beyond to join these efforts and strengthen solidarity for a more sustainable future.
