The Enduring Debate: The Keenness of the Academic and the Discontent of the Merchant

Employment authorities worldwide try to reconcile the outputs of education and training with the need of the labor market, so you find decision-makers in these countries interested in establishing institutions concerned with technical and vocational training, general, and higher education. In the same trend, establishing institutions involved with employment, such as ministries of labor and institutions that care about companies and entrepreneurship, Facilitates trade of all kinds.

Over time, we hear about a gap between educational and training institutions and employing companies. Specialists, academics, and technicians are interested in developing curricula that mimic the market and prepare students and trainees to enter the labor market after graduation. On the other hand, we hear about the discontent of business owners (merchants) about the inability of educational and training institutions to provide competencies and outputs capable of joining the labor market. When they accept work, the situation requires retraining them to prepare them to work efficiently.

When we look at the situation, we find a misunderstanding between the two sides. Educational and training institutions focus on curricula, education, and training according to specific trends. They may be governed by producing outputs according to their absorptive capacities and equipment, and not necessarily according to the needs of the labor market. On the other hand, the employer expects to obtain a qualified graduate. Some companies go too far with their conditions and require the graduate to have additional experience and courses, complicating the matter and increasing the controversy.

The number of educational and training specializations does not exceed hundreds worldwide. Educational and training institutions focus on providing curricula, lecturers, trainers and teachers for these specializations. At the same time, the labor market includes about (40) thousand different professions in the world according to rough unofficial data, and the number of jobs in the Sultanate of Oman exceeds (3) Thousands of jobs. It isn't easy to provide a curriculum for each job. Therefore, the supervisors of standards and curricula work to provide specializations that simulate several professions for graduates. For example, a welding graduate can work in (11) professions, and a computer graduate can work in dozens of various computer-related professions.

In conclusion, the debate will continue if a particular party does not reconcile the two parties. The situation may require that the party be a primary committee or a council for education and training that works on drawing education strategies to simulate employment requirements and include decision-makers in government agencies concerned with employment, education, and training. It also includes active members from the private sector and distributes them to professional committees and sectors to prepare professional standards and curricula and supervise the progress of the educational and training process, and that their decisions are effective and work to reduce the gap between academic and training institutions and the labor market that is rapidly accelerating and expects outputs that keep pace with its progress.
