I will mention some repetitive mistakes in the medical business that you should avoid:
- Expanding in the medical field horizontally; when you succeed in your medical work in a particular field; for example (medical devices), you would start planning to expand your field to another field for example: consumables, pharmaceuticals or laboratory products, etc, but that isn't correct.
It's better to expand vertically, in the same domain, so that it doesn't cost you extra effort or money. Or by increasing the number of customers and opening new markets.
- Remember that in order to increase sales vertically there are two ways: adding new products or increasing the number of clients.
- Employing people for a huge job expectation comes next. It would be better to avoid that and to make the hiring process only when it is urgent, necessary and there is work needed to be done.
- Monthly salary is determined based on the need of the employee to work and the surrounding circumstances. When you do this, the employee will start with it, but don't be surprised or think that the staff is always unfaithful to the company when working with competitors, since from the very beginning you exploited the general position of the employee.
- Commissions, bonuses and promotions are based on the seniority of the employees. There should be an institutional system that measures the employee's creativity and performance. This should be the standard measure every end of the year to distribute the promotions and commissions. Jack Welch, CEO of General Electric has a beautiful quote in this regard and it's that 20% of employees are engaged in the creativity and hold the most important work within the company; these employees must be well cared for. There are 60% good employees that are trained and motivated on a yearly basis. The remaining 20% are employees that must be laid off immediately.
My personal experience with Aumet Company; is that we work in one field only and that takes all the focus, and it is connecting hospitals with medical distributors and medical suppliers all over the world. Employees are hired only when needed and the functional arrangement of employing is clear and tied to a salary scale. We count the points system for all work performed and it's connected to the project management program called "Trello."
