No woman should die when giving life! A “silver” certified nonprofit: https://www.guidestar.org/profile/87-3636025
关于我们
Our goal is to reduce the number of women dying from preventable courses during pregnancy (reducing maternal mortality- UN sustainable development goal (SDG) target 3.1). We focus on midwives and mothers in remote areas of developing countries. We are headquartered in the San Francisco Bay Area. During repeat weeklong medical missions over a period of two years we support physician extenders (midwives, nurses, etc.) in optimizing prenatal care, expanding skills to include prenatal Point-of-Care-Ultrasound (POCUS) and patient education for needy cities/ municipalities in the Philippines. We use the “medical mission concept” to connect volunteers among highly trained and active medical professionals in high income countries with the truly needy in developing countries. We are data driven and focus on outcomes rather than output. We “teach teachers” and favor capacity building over donations leading to dependency. We use “result based management” for maximum impact and sustainable healthcare development instead of replacing healthcare at our target sites. In short: We aim to make a lasting difference where it is needed the most. We welcome volunteers from all walks of life including - but not limited to - healthcare professionals, social media afficionados, dieticians, educators, web designers, IT specialists, Filipino interpreters and all people interested in making a difference for the lives of the less fortunate. We also welcome support from companies, corporations, individuals from all walks of life. Charitable work can be beneficial for everyone involved - we could not do it without our volunteers, partners and contributors. We are a “silver” certified nonprofit: https://www.guidestar.org/profile/87-3636025 We all have mothers - let us work together to help those who need help the most. Interested in our work? Spacing pregnancies to allow for mothers, especially the under- or malnourished, to fully recover from a pregnancy requires spacing the pregnancies to allow for a WHO recommended 2.5 years pregnancy free interval is just common sense! It decreases maternal mortality and saves lives!
FIGO and the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) have released a joint statement highlighting the critical role of contraception in improving maternal and infant health. By addressing short inter-pregnancy intervals, we can reduce risks like maternal anaemia and newborn mortality. ?? Ensuring universal access to comprehensive, respectful and equitable contraception services is critical for improving maternal and newborn health outcomes worldwide. Collaboration between OBGYNs and midwives is essential for providing patient-centered contraceptive counselling, empowering women to make informed reproductive choices. Knowledge transfer + Teaching teachers = sustainable change So proud of our trainees turning into teachers: Apryl Collado, RN and Dominique Onil, RM of Culion, Palawan and of course all our trainees at the municipality of Linapacan, one of our other target islands in the northern Philippine province of Palawan. “Medical mission trips” to developing countries are popular among healthcare professionals from the US and Europe wanting to serve “people in need” (and combating “burnout” symptoms at home). More than 6000 such missions occur annually in the Philippines alone. Yet - they have a bad rep with public health professionals. Why? They may disrupt fragile existing healthcare structures locally, the help they provide is only temporary and mechanisms to address post mission complications are usually missing. Hence the reputation of “providing just a band aid” or worse: serving the missionaries more than the target population as a “feel-good-one-stop-selfie-shop”. Life Matters International just concluded another weeklong mission in Linapacan, where our advanced “super” users from another LMI intervention site started serving as teachers: trained midwives training newbie trainees in prenatal point-of-care ultrasound supervised by LMI staff. The advantages of this method are many and the success was immediate (fun factor included), but the sustained success at their sending as well as at the receiving site speaks for itself. This highly motivated group of midwives proves yet again, that sustainable change is possible simply by sharing their knowledge.

Very pleased to encounter another 4th class island municipality on the move in the Philippines: Lubang in the Province of Mindoro - world famous for the last Japanese soldier of WWII to surrender here in 1974(!) - is a candidate for LMI’s prenatal care POCUS project. Hardware, strategically positioned birthing facilities (certified) and a registry plus other systems for pregnancy tracking are in place. Dr Lalaine Quinan and Nurse Jinky Ariane Cuyong are ready to move this RHU to the next level. Thanks to a mayor dedicated to improving healthcare, the Hon. Michael L Orayani, supported by council members and Dra Vivienne Valisno, chief of the local hospital, this looks rather promising… #Equity2030Alliance

After the mission is before the mission…. After two super successful missions in the Calamian islands of Linapacan and Culion in May and early June we are already preparing for the next missions there in September where we follow up on practice efforts by the midwives/ nurses and deepen the in-person teaching experience. There are only few remaining openings for sonographer volunteers to join us in teaching POCUS to the local midwife trainees, all of who have had at least one in-person experience already, but need to refine their technique and introduction of a local QA system. Dates: 2.-6. September (Linapacan) 9.-13.September (Culion) For details and further information, please email to [email protected]

Global Health, women’s health or health in general-it all starts with addressing maternal mortality. If women continue to die from preventable causes related to childbirth, we will not make progress. There is a reason this is #1 of the UN sustainable development goals for health.
It’s a simple fact: family planning transforms lives and unlocks economic potential. When women have the power to decide if and when to have children, they can plan their future and pursue their dreams. This also helps ensure healthy women deliver healthy babies when they do decide to become mothers. Yet, too often, resources for family planning and women’s health are the first to be cut. Marie Ba, Director of the Ouagadougou Partnership (OP) Coordination Unit—a group that works to increase access to contraception in West Africa—shares why supporting women’s health is a good investment for women, their families, and even, their countries. We agree, they are also the heroes in the remote underserved areas we serve. Hence we raise their capacity by equipping them with POCUS skills to - Most accurately date pregnancies - Avoid emergencies at the time of birth and - Improving the quality of care and every mother’s experience. On top of that they become POCUS teachers themselves and train their peers. This is the stuff real sustainable development is made of!
