Thanks Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI) for publishing my piece on AI in the Global South. ?? I argued that Policy makers and legislators must incorporate societal values and human rights into emerging AI tools. After all, this is by far the most important regulatory framework of the decade – and perhaps the century. Developed economies and multilateral institutions have a moral obligation to help Global South countries address their unique challenges and to avoid the risks of AI colonization, before it is too late. With the exception of authoritarian nations like China et al, I can't think of any place worse than the EU when it comes to AI innovation. The EU places so many stupid unnecessary regulatory restrictions and burdens on so much technology, including AI, that despite the good intentions, is only frustrating netizens, and stifling development and innovation in the region. I now completely understand why so many netizens of the EU rely so heavily on VPNs.?

Global South countries continue to face the same challenges in AI governance as they did during the evolution of internet governance—token representation without meaningful influence. The prevailing power dynamics remain skewed in favour of the Global North, making it difficult for AI governance frameworks to genuinely reflect the needs and values of the Global South. Without addressing these entrenched inequities, the discourse around AI governance risks repeating the same mistakes: an unequal, top-down approach that marginalises the priorities and perspectives of the majority of the world. It is imperative that we rethink our approach to global governance to ensure fair and equitable participation. #AIGovernance #GlobalSouth #DigitalEquity #AIethics #TechForGood #GlobalGovernance
