After years of prioritizing partisan politics over art, America's entertainment industry is in crisis. In Hollywood everyone--from hair-dressers and grips to studio executives--either can't find work, or is being laid off. Live theatre in particular has been struggling: Since theatres reopened in 2022, an estimated 30% of the audience hasn't returned, and theatres across America are desperately cutting corners...or closing outright. Experts have predicted as much as a 50% contraction of the business this year. Such failure is even more stark when you consider that OTHER forms of live entertainment--from pop music to pro-wrestling--are THRIVING. In spite of all this, however, in just 8 weeks I managed to raise nearly $150,000 to write and star in a play. This, as all but the top 1% of actors resign themselves to not making a living doing theatre like they used to. The success of the Sowell campaign indicates there are plenty of people willing to invest in art they want to see. They just want to see it done by people who don't hate them.
#FAIRintheArts Fellow Clifton Duncan is developing a dynamic one-man-show, embodying Dr. Thomas Sowell! His crowdfunded campaign for this project has smashed the original goal by over 1000%, with over 900 backers, $135K dollars raised, and the numbers are still increasing. Audiences are hungry for authentic artistic projects that are unafraid to challenge dominant narratives, reveal hidden truths, and seek to unite us around our common humanity. ??????????????'?? ???????????? ?????????????????????? ?????????????? - ???? ???????? ?????????? Ah, my dear friends, welcome to the legendary abode, the hallowed halls of Boocle's Casino. Allow me to remind you, Boocle, the rising star, crafts seamless video loops with consummate artistry. It plays, with bewildering mastery, on the slender thread between the authenticity of the real and the enchantment of artificial intelligence. ??????????????:?https://www.boocle.io Since the dawn of this quest, discreet and hushed, that is this secret fundraising auction, dialogues have been woven, dense and sustained. Virtual conferences, like invitations to the ball of finance, were shared. The pitch decks, like arrows, were launched. And thus, the investment offers, rare and precious, countable on the fingers of one hand. Yet, here comes a twist in the tale of Boocle. A protagonist, as unexpected as elusive, invites themselves to this prestigious table. The Casino of Boocle, a place of all stakes. There, without preamble, without even a hint of prior contact, a contract magically arrived. What audacity! Like a homing pigeon, it crosses the skies, far from sight, under the radar. A creator at heart, surprise is my everyday. But here, oh! The surprise was significant. Here I am, unseated, almost fallen from my seat as the lord of the rings. To you, enigmatic player, Boocle pays homage with an endless creation depicting your legendary entrance. A gesture, a sign, a wink, to say: Welcome to our company. I just tripped over this blog by Alan Harrison, that is hosted on the artsjournal website. I found his provocative writing interesting because he shares a perspective with me –that within the not for profit theatre sector, many companies put a priority on their own growth, over serving the needs of their Community. "The difference between artists and arts organizations, as discussed in the books?Scene Change?and?Scene Change 2, is that artists make magic and arts organizations make money. Nonprofit arts organizations, which are supposed to be different in nature than commercial art (but, so often, choose to believe that the presentation of art is somehow a charitable activity – it is not), have made the error in judgment to produce as their commercial counterparts would. They measure their success not by how much better the community is — in either social service, community activism, social justice initiatives, or just helping out poor people — but by reviews from the press, ticket sales, and all the wealthy donors’ names on the walls. Vainglory doesn’t come close to describing the idea that an “artistic vision” somehow is a charitable goal, but pulling people out of despair is not. And, as we’ve stated on numerous occasions, that’s why the money is drying up. To nonprofit arts organization leaders: stop blaming the pandemic. Stop blaming the audiences. Stop blaming everyone else. Look straight in the mirror, even if you inherited the dysfunction. ...artists: try to understand that you are more important to your community than the organization that may or may not hire you for a job. You have more leverage than you think. When other companies have chosen the path of community-centrism, they have provided more artists jobs than ever. Nonprofit arts organizations that do work that improves the community generally are happier and more fulfilling places to work than a simple gig could offer. And the need is constant for creative ways to solve your community’s biggest problems. To put it another way: if all the nonprofit arts organizations were to close in your community, who would suffer? In the short term, a lot of people, including artists. In the long term, artists would find ways to team up, collaborate, and use their skill sets to create art in response to the community, not in spite of it. If all the artists in a community were to suddenly leave, who would suffer? Everyone. There is no community without creativity. There is no business without creativity. And, of course, there is no art without creativity. Take advantage of that. As an artist, you deserve to be heard."

The US cultural sector is facing vast generational challenges. This is an informative article about why. #buildingmuseums #museums #museumsadapt #exhibitiondesign
???????????????????? ???????? ?????? ????????????????: ???????????????????? 'The hangover after the museum party: institutions in the US are facing a funding crisis' As the baby-boomer generation of major donors pulls back or dies off, museums are struggling to attract their heirs’ interest. In this article, the first in a two-part series by Julia Halperin in The Art Newspaper on the future of museum fundraising, Adrian Ellis, founder of AEA Consulting notes: “The reckoning is slow—it’s an erosion of energy, acquisitions and programming...It’s a story of energy seeping out.” Read the full article here:

Brilliant article by Tahina Akther on the use of Community Interest Companies in sport. Scunthorpe United found itself in dire straits, on the cusp of losing its stadium and unable to obtain a loan from a bank. A legal structure was required which sat somewhere between a charity and a for-profit company; the CIC proved to be the perfect fit. CICs were the brain child of the late Stephen Lloyd, former managing partner of Bates Wells. Put simply, CICs are a model for social enterprise; an entity which must provide benefit to the community but which can also allow for dividends to be paid to investors. There are features which protect a CIC's mission, most notably the asset lock, which enable entities such as Scunthorpe United to access state assistance. As Tahina says: "CICs offer a modern solution to an historic problem for sports and leisure clubs.?The fact they are specifically designed to deliver a community benefit means that they are very attractive to local and central government when they are looking to award community grants.?This also works well for collaborative work with charities or for funding by charities and philanthropists.?However, unlike charities their limited liability structure makes them more flexible for working with entrepreneurs and for obtaining financing." I frequently work with CICs and am pleased to see others recognising their potential in the sports world. Get in touch if you'd like to discuss! https://lnkd.in/eZwd7hEr

Happy Sunday everyone! I'm delighted to announce that I won 2nd prize in the Photojournalism Series category with Monovisions Awards 2024. https://lnkd.in/dd3NyE_9 This project started in Brazil in 2022 and it's been on the shelf for a while (as projects often do) but it is not over. This award brought some renewed energy and made me feel like I should put more effort into it. The project focuses on the life and people of a Quilombo in the region of Iporanga, state of Sao Paulo. In a nutshell, a Quilombo is a community reminiscent of the resilience and cultural heritage of escaped African slaves. Some of them started over 400 years ago. The goal has always been to turn it into a small publication and bring it back to Brazil, so that local governments and potencial sponsors/funding could understand the strengths and the importance of the local populations and allocate more resources to these communities and preserve its traditions. Be it through improved infrastructure for access, promoting tourism, or other means that allow the community to live in the forest and have a controlled impact in their environment, the local authorities can and should have a positive influence in the region and the people living in it. From what I gathered during my stay there - in the particular case of Quilombo Bairro Bombas - these people feel left out. The lack of access (it takes an 8km jungle hike to get to the community), the lack of resources and the tight restrictions on the land they can use makes it harder for them to sustain their current lifestyle, and eventually young generations start leaving and moving on to a 'city life'. But of course not all is that simple. Internal conflicts and a strong sense of victimhood foster a passive approach to their capacities as a community. While well intended, left-wing politics often frames minority struggles through the lens of the victim, potentially leading to a focus on reparations. An alternative approach could emphasise empowerment and self-determination, fostering a sense of agency within these communities. I hope that this project can somehow help in their efforts. I envision a small book that not only captures the portraits of these individuals but also celebrates the invaluable traditions and way of life they've upheld for centuries. A testament to their perseverance and profound value in keeping their customs and connection to the land for future generations to remember. Does any of you have experience crowdfunding? If so, do you think it would work for such a project? Enjoy the rest of your day! ??

Why I'm a top tier sponsor for Game Changer Week: My personal involvement with VTCRC began ~2010 as a panelist with Jim Flowers at the Inaugural Global Student Business Concept Challenge. It was a blast. As I recall, "The Irish Team" won. This was quickly followed by general mayhem that evening as the team spent their winnings in Blacksburg watering holes. Good news: They saved $ by sleeping in some obliging nearby shrubbery that evening. I did that event for several years. It was my favorite annual event. I know there are some companies in the community that are or have implemented the Entrepreneurial Operating System into their business. Kudos to them. They are either self-implementing or they are importing an EOS Implementer from outside of our region, probably at a premium. (Don't change a thing you're doing.) I'm sponsoring Game Changer Week because I believe in VBR and this event has given me the perfect opportunity to unite two areas of high interest to me: The VTCRC and surrounding communities with the Entrepreneurial Operating System. Game changer week is a fabulous four day event. Even if you have absolutely no interest in anything I have to offer, I urge you to take a look at the exceptional content being offered by the organizers. I'll be "giving away" EOS all week. It shouldn't be too hard to find me. Get more of what you want. #runabetterbusiness #liveabetterlife #eosworldwide #eos #eosimplementer #gamechanger #gamechangerweek #vtcrc #vbr
