No. 14 Oakland struck gold with their upset over No. 3 Kentucky last night. Here's how they just earned their entire conference millions of dollars until 2030 ?? Every year, the NCAA sets aside hundreds of millions of dollars to pay the teams that make the tournament. This year that total “basketball fund” will likely be over $170 million and the money that gets paid out is distributed to a team’s entire conference. Conferences get paid out based on how many games their teams win in the tournament: ? First Four (Play-In): $2M ? Round of 64: $2M ? Round of 32: $2M ? Sweet 16: $2M ? Elite 8: $2M ? Final Four: $2M = $12M (max payout from a single team) But here's the best part: the conferences get paid whatever amount their teams earn EVERY YEAR for the next six years. This means Oakland just secured the Horizon League a total of at least $12M over the next six years FWIW, in 2023 the Horizon League lost money: ? $8.35M in revenue ? $9.59M in expenses Meanwhile, the University of Kentucky Men's Basketball program alone made $29.6M in revenue that same year. On this day in1869: The first intercollegiate football game was played between Rutgers and Princeton, with Rutgers winning 6-4. Add'l knowledge: that score of 6-4 means that Rutgers scored 6 "TDs" as we know them, to Princeton's 4. No PATs. TDs were called "goals", and each was worth 1pt, way back in the 1800s. Thank you to the Council of Michigan Foundations for the opportunity to share fraud-fighting best practices with the foundation community. The session offered many tips on how foundations can collaborate with their partner and awardee organizations to collectively prevent fraud. To avoid a commercial-like presentation, we shared some of our “secret sauce,” including many do-it-yourself tips and tricks, and even our engagement letter template and tasks, so attendees had a roadmap to perform these tasks themselves rather than needing to hire a third party like us. For those who need to hire a third party for fraud prevention services, we shared best practices and tips on managing that relationship, including the dos and don’ts we’ve learned (some the hard way) from performing this type of engagement with several organizations. Do you work for a foundation or municipality responsible for awarding funds but lack internal resources to help your partners? We have multiple relationships with foundations and governmental organizations that provide additional funding to their nonprofit partners specifically to hire us to enhance their fraud prevention toolkits and reduce fraud risk. This is a win-win scenario, as neither organization wants to end up in the headlines due to embezzlement, but often both lack the expertise or personnel to proactively address it.

Many Black entrepreneurs may not have access to these resources or may not have the necessary connections or experience. Industry barriers: The film industry is notoriously difficult to break into, even for established professionals. Barriers to entry include networking, connections, and access to decision-makers. Stereotypes and biases: Unfortunately, there are still biases and stereotypes within the industry that can hinder the success of Black entrepreneurs. For example, some producers or investors may not take Black-led projects seriously or may be skeptical of their potential success. Fear of isolation: Starting a new venture can be isolating, especially if it's not supported by the broader industry. Some Black entrepreneurs may be hesitant to leave the relative safety of established companies or networks. However, there are signs of change: Increased representation: The rise of streaming platforms has created new opportunities for diverse storytelling and representation. Growing demand for diverse content: Audiences are increasingly demanding more diverse content, leading to a growing market for stories told by and about people of color. New talent emerging: A new generation of Black creatives is emerging, with fresh perspectives and innovative ideas.

When we agree, we don’t need the law—a handshake is as good as a contract, and maybe better. Our leaders negotiate and reach reasonable conclusions. Dispues get worked out. The law is what helps us to live in the same society when we don’t agree. It’s never been more important than now. I’m looking forward to a lively discussion!
