Simplifying RFx: It’s Like Choosing the Perfect Cake Last week,, I gave a 1-hour intro training on the basics of the RFx process. I wanted to simplify the understanding for those new to procurement, and that’s when I came up with this simple analogy. Also, it is much easier to respond to 'what you do' in the holiday settings coming soon now. Choosing the perfect supplier is like choosing the perfect cake for a party. Here’s how: Step 1: Define Your Cake (Detailed Specifications) Just like you’d decide what kind of cake you want—chocolate, vanilla, how many layers, etc.—in RFx, you need to clearly define your needs. What product or service are you looking for? What are the key requirements? Step 2: Ask for Prices from Bakers You wouldn’t just settle for the first baker. Instead, you’d ask a few bakers what they can offer and how much they charge. Similarly, in RFx, you invite suppliers to submit their proposals or quotes. Step 3: Compare the Options (Evaluation Criteria) After getting the quotes, you’d compare them based on factors like cost, quality, and how fast they can deliver the cake. In procurement, you do the same—evaluate suppliers on multiple criteria such as price, quality, delivery time, and innovation. Step 4: Choose the Best Baker (Decision) Finally, you pick the baker who offers the best value based on your needs. In RFx, this is when you select the supplier that provides the optimal combination of cost, quality, and fit for your project. I have found this analogy to be a great way to simplify the RFx process for anyone new to procurement. It shows how important it is to have a structured approach—whether you are selecting a cake or a supplier. I even tried it with my son and I think he could relate a bit to this. Advice to Bakery workers! straight up, am telling do not settled on a particular task given to you in the baking hall. Try learning other things for this is the only way you can grow and become more relevant in the industry. This days your value is based on what you can offer, stop saying " am a mixer, am a fireman, am a miller". You said you're a baker but you cant mix out good dough, you only specialized on oven operation ?? who does that in this era? ?? You're limiting your chances of earning big, come make i show you the way ?? I was opportune to work in a sectional Lebanese restaurant as a bread baker back 2016, I didn't settle in my position, I used my spare time to visit on sections to learn. I normally request to assist them in their production, even my off days i still visit other sections from there, I learn to make varieties of exotic pastries including : pizza, shawarma, desserts and lot more.. Make i shock you ? My Lebanese bosses loved my improvement, and I was later promoted twice big.. Very cool to see Gail's joining the likes of Feeld and Loewe in building out their brand universe by creating their own print magazine. Mags are the perfect way to tell the myriad stories behind a brand –?in Gail's case, the growers, producers and bakers that all contribute to building the premium bakery. After years of print decline, it feels like the pendulum is swinging back the other way as creatives and brands are remembering the benefits that print has over digital creative. The tangibility is powerful – it's a luxury. Loewe, for e.g., are doing a killer job of creating cultural cache for their mag. It's not the right move for every brand. But if your's is all about craft and quality, print is the perfect way to bring that world to life. Why buy a sausage roll from Gail's when you can get four from Greggs for the same price?
