The small team's system is simple and minimizes operational burden. The big team's system is complex and needs a team to maintain it indefinitely. The small team has clear accountability for delivery. The big team masks accountability. ---- This scales to larger orgs too. Do you need 40 engineers or just 8 really good ones? Some famous examples: - Amazon S3 was built by 12 engineers. - Git, Minecraft, and Bittorrent were each written by 1 engineer. - When WhatsApp was acquired by Facebook, they had 950 million users and 35 engineers. I've seen it work first-hand at Row Zero. We operate under the superstar model. It's how we've built a spreadsheet that's 100x faster than Excel and 1000x faster than Google Sheets with an engineering team of 5.
