After college, I applied for my first professional role as a crime prevention specialist at a non-profit. I was both excited and nervous about my first professional interview. After the interview, my potential boss surprised me by asking if I wanted to be considered for the supervisory position instead of the specialist role. Having no experience as a supervisor, my immediate reaction was to say “no.” However, she encouraged me to step outside my comfort zone and give it a try. I decided to take the leap, even though I wasn’t sure what kind of leader I should be. Leading a five-member team of peers, all of us new to non-profit work and crime prevention, was both exciting and daunting. Our mission was to build a program from scratch within 18 months and secure permanent funding. With no clear roadmap, I trusted my instincts and focused on collaboration. We started with a brainstorming session that generated over 100 ideas for the program. From there, we experimented, refined, and built a collaborative team dynamic. By fostering open communication and valuing everyone’s input, we achieved our goal within 12 months, securing permanent county funding for the program. Remarkably, more than 40 years later, elements of that program still exist and continue to receive county support. Baby boomers often favor a traditional, hierarchical leadership style that emphasizes loyalty, a clear chain of command, and goal achievement through established structures. While I respect these elements—particularly the importance of face-to-face communication—I’ve found that collaboration and open communication are essential for building successful teams. Our leadership styles are shaped by our experiences, values, and instincts, and I’ve learned that trusting your gut while empowering others can lead to lasting success.
