Last week saw the launch of the ???????? ???? ??????????????’?? ?????????? ???????????? ???????????????? ???????????????? (????????), a significant step forward in the region’s commitment to restoring biodiversity and addressing the ecological crisis. As ?????? ?????????? ???????? to be launched in England, it sets a pioneering example for the rest of the country. ?? Developed by the ???????? ???? ?????????????? ???????????????? ?????????????????? (????????) and supported by key partners, including ?????????????? ??????????????, ???????? ???? ?????????????? ???????????? ?????????????????????? (????????) and local communities, the strategy outlines a clear plan for nature recovery at a landscape scale. This includes nine priority programmes designed to restore vital habitats, protect biodiversity, and tackle the interconnected challenges of climate change and ecological decline. ???? Key initiatives focus on ?????????????? ??????????????????????, ?????????????? ????????????????, and ?????????????????????? ???????? ????????????????????, from grassland connections to urban nature and river restoration. Notably, the region is already seeing success with the return of species like ?????????????? to the Bristol Avon and ????????-?????????? to Severnside, further demonstrating the potential impact of these efforts. ?? The launch is an important milestone for the West of England, positioning the region as a ???????????? in nature recovery. The strategy is a testament to what can be achieved when local authorities, businesses, landowners, NGOs and communities collaborate to restore nature. It also offers a model for other regions across the UK, showing that recovery can happen when we work together, with a focus on long-term, sustainable change. ?? Invest in Green Infrastructure: Prioritize the creation of parks and green spaces that provide habitats for local wildlife while improving air quality and community health. 2. Engage Communities: Foster partnerships with local organizations and residents to promote ecological stewardship and ensure that initiatives reflect community needs. 3. Implement Nature-Based Solutions: Use natural systems to address urban challenges, such as flooding and heat, by restoring ecosystems and enhancing biodiversity. Developing land-based sequestration projects that restore and protect nature is at the heart of their work - and an essential activity on the road to #netzero.?Critical to this is work understanding the cultural significance of the project areas and identifying and engaging the local Traditional Owners. Through #reforestation and #habitatrestoration, these projects don't just remove carbon they also offer a host of co-benefits like enhancing biodiversity and ecosystem resilience and providing economic opportunities, cultural values, and improved water and air quality for communities. They can also help organisations achieve #emissionsreduction and nature-positive goals by generating high-integrity #carbonoffsets or #insets. As our oceans continue to warm, putting Australia's kelp forests at risk, especially in the east where temperatures have risen three times faster than the global average, urgent action is needed. In eastern Tasmania, there has been a devastating 95% loss of Giant Kelp forests over the past four to five decades. To address this crisis, The Nature Conservancy (TNC) launched the Giant Kelp Forest Restoration Partnership in mid-2023. This collaborative effort aims to restore Giant Kelp forests on a large scale by pooling knowledge and experience. The project is crucial in developing a comprehensive recovery plan for giant kelp and mapping its current distribution in Australia.
