Carri Chischilly’s upbringing on the Navajo Nation Reservation inspired a lifetime commitment to support Indigenous families. Reflecting on the strong family and community support she received, Carri now channels those values into her work with ZERO TO THREE’s THRIVE program (formerly PATH), providing vital assistance for home visiting in Indigenous communities. She’s passionate about nurturing the same resilience and connection that helped her succeed. "Growing up, my family was my village. It’s my hope to create that same support for other Indigenous families." Read her story: https://bit.ly/3UTWolA

For Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and increasingly non-Aboriginal people, the day the First Fleet raised the Union Jack at Warrane, Sydney Cove is known as Invasion Day and celebrated and recognised as Survival Day. 'Warrane' is the Sydney language word for Sydney Cove. The Gadigal people have lived on the southern shore of Port Jackson for millennia. The land and harbour provided abundant resources, and the people thrived. The historical events of January 26 means that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people see this date as a day that marks the anniversary of colonisation and dispossession of this nation’s First Peoples in 1788. For the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, young people, and families who Mackillop works with across Australia, our commitment to reconciliation through truth-telling, means listening to the community. For many Aboriginal people, January 26 is a reminder of harsh and inhumane policies. These policies, that continued into the 1970’s, and created the Stolen Generation, continue to impact Aboriginal children and young people – some of whom we work with, through intergenerational trauma and disadvantage.

Every year, January 26 brings out a lot of division and debate. Aboriginal people aren’t saying there shouldn’t be an Australia Day. We aren’t saying that non-Indigenous Australians are personally guilty for the actions of colonizing ancestors. What we are asking for is recognition, understanding, and a willingness to reflect on what this day represents to First Nations people. January 26 is a day of mourning for many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, marking the beginning of immense loss, suffering, and resilience. Moving forward together means creating a national day that truly unites us all—one that celebrates the diversity, strength, and beauty of modern Australia while acknowledging its full history. It’s not about erasing history; it’s about honoring it with truth and empathy

Today we celebrate Indigenous Peoples' Day, a commemoration which began in 2021 and celebrates the history of Native Americans. The 2023 White House Proclamation on Indigenous Peoples' Day best summarizes the importance of this day. It reads, "On Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we honor the perseverance and courage of Indigenous peoples, show our gratitude for the myriad contributions they have made to our world, and renew our commitment to respect Tribal sovereignty and self-determination. The story of America’s Indigenous peoples is a story of their resilience and survival; of their persistent commitment to their right to self-governance; and of their determination to preserve cultures, identities, and ways of life.?Long before European explorers sailed to this continent, Native American and Alaska Native Nations made this land their home, some for thousands of years before the United States was founded.?They built many Nations that created powerful, prosperous, and diverse cultures, and they developed knowledge and practices that still benefit us today.” #indigenouspeoplesday

International Mission Board missionaries can’t always live in the countries among the people they serve. While this can make ministry challenging, missionaries have navigated this in many ways, depending on the context and country. https://lnkd.in/gsXg4kzd

SCO RECOGNIZES JUNETEENTH This Juneteenth, or Emancipation Day, the Southern Chiefs’ Organization (SCO) stands in solidarity with Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour across Turtle Island. Juneteenth takes place on June 19 every year. It is an annual holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. Many people in Canada do not know that slavery continued into Canada. Colonial families kept slaves in this part of the world for more than two centuries. It is important to draw attention to the plight of people who were brought into this country as slaves. While we are thankful for Canadians who helped runaways escaping the US, Canada was not innocent during this dark part of history. Systemic injustices continue to affect Canadians of colour on a daily basis. In solidarity, we continue to advocate for a better future! Today is Juneteenth. Some of you may be asking what Juneteenth is - and I would counsel you to stop asking and start researching. It doesn't take much to google it and check out the entry on wikipedia (https://lnkd.in/gcennVVF). Now is that sufficient? No. It's a start. Understand how the day became a federal holiday (though not recognized by all organizations). Then ask why some companies don't enable their employees to celebrate African American history (or at least without taking an unpaid holiday or one of their vacation days). Or ask why/how the 250k enslaved people who were freed on June 19, 1865 were still held in slavery over 2.5 years after the emancipation proclamation was issued? The key is not thinking you have all the answers. It's asking questions that get you those answers over time. #juneteenth #perspective #americanhistory #slavery
