The suicide rate in England rose 6% last year compared with 2022. 1 year and 3 months ago, I was bereaved by suicide. My Stepdad who I had known since I was 3 years old took his life. The services that were offered to my family during the aftermath of his death did not apply to me as he died in Lancashire and I live in Manchester, and their funding boundaries meant they could not cover me. I had to go away and find my own counselling support. Thankfully I was keen to get help processing my grief and came across Suicide&Co. I was offered 12 counselling sessions with a kind and gentle Counsellor who had their own lived experience of suicide, which I finished earlier this year, around the time of the one year anniversary of my Stepdad's death. Since then, I feel so much more in tune with so many more things. Things that I never would have imagined I would have to look at. The phrase 'committed suicide' was just part of my vernacular, but since his death, I now know and actively try to dissuade people from saying it. Anything to help eradicate the stigma. Anything to try and remember Barry as he was and not get distracted by the taboo that passively tars dying by suicide.
