Super exciting to see the launch of the #BuiltEnvironment Market Transformation Action Agenda last week at the first Buildings and Climate Global Forum! (https://lnkd.in/gqX9dN_h) In support of the UN's Buildings Breakthrough goal to make near zero emission and resilient buildings the norm by 2030, this Action Agenda from WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development identifies three levers for transformation, and calls for strong collaboration among built environment stakeholders to pull them: ? 1. Adopt life-cycle thinking and Whole-Life Carbon Assessment across the full value chain and align key indicators, metrics and targets ? 2. Integrate the carbon cost and reflect it in the price of products and services throughout the value chain, including in procurement and taxonomy 3. From 7–8? March 2024 climate action leaders will meet in Paris for the Buildings and Climate Global Forum. The Forum aims to initiate a new impetus in international collaboration for building #decarbonisation and resilience after #COP28. The Forum will expand on the goals of the Buildings Breakthrough initiative, launched at COP28, which aims to strengthen international collaboration to #decarbonise the building sector and make clean technologies and sustainable solutions the most affordable, accessible, and attractive option in all regions by 2030. Our two projects, the Net Zero Carbon Buildings Commitment and #BuildingLife are recognised as key initiatives supporting the delivery of the Buildings Breakthrough. 1?? Why and which sectors are greenhushing the most? 2?? How are climate-conscious companies progressing towards their ambitious climate targets? 3?? What barriers are they encountering, and what innovative solutions are they embracing to translate ambition into action? ????This is a sneak peak of what we are uncovering with South Pole's latest Net-Zero Report as we've surveyed 1,400 businesses across 12 countries and 14 sectors to dig deeper on the corporate landscape and progress towards net zero. I love me some good data. What struck me most from the insights is ?? the drivers for pursuing net zero targets: customer demand stands out as primary driver with 46 %, surpassing investor pressure, brand leadership no longer ranks among the top three ?? overambition in target setting: a significant number of companies, including hard-to-abate sectors, aim for net zero by or before 2030. This suggests underestimation of the complexity of reducing emissions across intricate value chains within six years. International collaboration is the missing link that can help us achieve net zero! The new set of COP28 priority actions builds on the strong progress achieved under the #BreakthroughAgenda's inaugural Action Plan launched at COP27, with a set of 29 priority actions, designed to further accelerate international collaborative action in 2024. The recommendations in the International Energy Agency (IEA)-led 2023 Breakthrough Agenda Report, outline shared priorities that can help course-correct the delivery of the Paris Agreement, and avoid delaying our net-zero goals. These actions are designed to decarbonise the crucial 7 sectors which are responsible for 60% of global emissions - power, road transport, steel, hydrogen, agriculture, buildings, and cement and concrete. The actions emphasise the importance of common standards, technology R&D, trade, and improved technical and financial assistance on the pathway to net zero. Excited to share that I’ve completed the “Net Zero 101: What, Why and How” e-course by the United Nations University Institute for Advanced Study of Sustainability (UNU-IAS), affiliated with UN CC ! ??This course provided me with a solid foundation on the science of climate change, its socio-economic impacts, and the actionable steps we can all take toward achieving a #NetZero society. ?? Key Takeaways: ? Understanding the link between anthropogenic climate change and net zero ? The critical role of international organizations and treaties in climate action ?
