?? Tell This Story: A Path Forward for Our Heroes ?? In the United States, there are over 20 million individuals currently or formerly serving in the first responder disciplines and the military. This includes: 800,000 full-time law enforcement officers across 17,000 agencies 1.1 million firefighters and EMS Tens of thousands of dispatchers. 1.3 million active-duty military personnel, along with 800,000 in the reserves and National Guard. Approximately 17.4 million veterans from all conflicts. Despite their bravery, these heroes confront staggering mental health challenges, with alarming suicide rates: Law enforcement officers: 17 per 100,000 Firefighters and EMS: 18 per 100,000 Active-duty military: 24.8 per 100,000 Veterans: 31.6 per 100,000 Civilians: 14 per 100,000 These statistics paint a troubling picture of the struggles faced by those who dedicate their lives to protecting and serving our communities. But WE ARE NOT ALONE in this fight. In my book, "Hiding in Plain Sight," I emphasize that sharing our experiences is crucial to breaking the stigma around mental health and finding a way forward. By opening up about our challenges, we can create supportive communities where healing begins. It’s time to own our journey, share them, and turn into our purpose. By fostering resilience, embracing honesty, and sharing the truth about our stories, we can help ourselves and others find strength and growth. Together, we can rewrite the narrative and pave the way for a brighter, healthier future for all who serve. You are holding the pen. Tell This Story. DID YOU KNOW? Veterans DO NOT need to be enrolled in the VA system to receive COMPACT-related emergency care when in an acute crisis for emergent suicide symptoms. Access to crisis stabilization is huge when it comes to suicide prevention. Veterans dealing with PTSD and other mental health issues need to know that they are not in this alone, and there is medical, mental health, and support services available to them that can help. Regardless of VA enrollment status, COMPACT-eligible individuals are: · Former members of the armed forces who were discharged or released from active duty after more than 24 months of active service under conditions other than dishonorable. · Former members of the armed forces, including reserve service members, who served more than 100 days under a combat exclusion or in support of a contingency operation either directly or by operating an unmanned aerial vehicle from another location who were discharged under conditions other than dishonorable. · Former members of the armed forces who were the victim of a physical assault of a sexual nature, a battery of a sexual nature, or sexual harassment while serving in the armed forces. The clinical care team at Austin Oaks Hospital understands that female veterans face identity challenges; a professional identity, military identity, being a parent, and being female. We want every patient to know that they are valued, important, and seen when they feel that there are no other options. Austin Oaks Hospital takes a comprehensive team approach to provide you with the collaborative care you need. Call (512) 440-4800 and speak to a clinical specialist today. Assessments are at no cost and available 24/7. #UHS #thisisuhs #austinoakshospital #PTSDawareness2023 #ptsd #veterans #birthtrauma #domesticviolence #griefandloss #inpatient #outpatient #PHP #IOP #austintexas #texas #behavioiralhealthcare #mentalhealth #womenswellnessATX #womenshealthmatters #veteransmentalhealth #acutecare #austintexas #texas #military #compactact #womenveterans Lisa Modur, MA, CPRSS, CMHC

#therapeuticmilieu #cognitive #context #environment #cognitivewarfare #veterans #military #ptsd #posttraumaticgrowth #nosyneighbor "Cognitive Warfare at the Micro-Level: How a Nosy Neighbor destroyed the Trajectory of a Veteran to Post-Traumatic Growth" ? When we discuss the topic of "Cognitive Warfare," one may think at the macro level like how information or propaganda is used to destroy trust between people and/or their government and military. And at the micro-level a nosy neighbor can ruin the therapeutic environment that we live in (burst the bubble of the healthy milieu). One of the reasons for staying away from "toxic" people. I had been working with a veteran for about 6 years and he is doing well. This person is an introvert but is happy to receive compliments from others. He found enjoyment in doing yard work and landscaping in one of his siblings yard. Even though his family may not agree with some of his landscape ideas, they still allowed him to work on their yard as a hobby because it gives him joy and created a therapeutic environment for his continued post-traumatic growth. One day a nosy neighbor had a conversation with the veteran and inserted ideas that changed the context of the therapeutic environment. He convinced the veteran that his landscaping is so nice and he should be charging his family for it. Remember that his sibling did not really like the style of the landscaping but allowed this veteran to work their yard for its therapeutic benefits. The whole context of the environment changed, and the veteran no longer enjoyed working on the yard. It even caused arguments between him and his family because he expected to be paid for his hobby. In other words, it transformed the enjoyable activity (hobby) to "work." That is a simple way to explain "cognitive warfare." Changing the perception and the context of the activity can cause discontent and dissatisfaction. Six years of therapeutic work and trust between family members was destroyed in one or several days of haranguing by a nosy neighbor. "Each of us should please our neighbors for their good, to build them up." (Romans 15:2 NIV) *I am a psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner with over 9 years of experience as a Combat Casualty Visiting Nurse for veterans and active-duty military members.

?? VA Management Bonuses: What They Won't Cut ?? ?? My book, "Veterans Affairs Whistleblower Retaliation", is available through my website: https://lnkd.in/gt_TPqux. Thank you so much for your support! ?? They don't cut the bonus money though for management or anyone at the VA. And it's really managers that typically get bonus money. I never did in my work there, but managers did. I write in detail about this in my book "Veterans Affairs Whistleblower Retaliation", so check it out. They're not going to cut the salaries, and they're not going to cut the useless, redundant staff. They're not going to cut the redundant departments, and they're not going to cut the redundant phone numbers that do nothing but give Military Veterans and their family members the run around. #VeteransHealth #VAManagement #BonusMoney #Whistleblower #VAStaff #VeteransRights #MilitaryVeterans #HealthcareReform #RedundantSystems #VABureaucracy #VeteransAffairs #HealthcareSystem #VeteranSupport #VAWhistleblower #PolicyIssues #VAAccountability #VeteransDeserveBetter #VAMentalHealth #HealthcareManagement #VeteransAffairsWhistleblower

The ongoing investigation into the Maine shooting by a reservist has shed light on critical gaps in mental healthcare access for reservists. Colonel Mark Ochoa, command surgeon for the U.S. Army Reserve Command, highlighted limitations in care compared to full-time soldiers. Key considerations: * Geographic limitations and lack of VA eligibility for reservists can restrict access to treatment. * Communication barriers prevent private providers from sharing information with the military command. * Stigma surrounding mental health treatment may deter reservists from seeking help. Recommendations: * Expand mental health services for reservists to ensure accessibility. * Address privacy concerns to facilitate open communication with healthcare providers. * Foster a culture of support within the military to normalize mental health treatment. By prioritizing comprehensive mental healthcare for ALL service members, including reservists, we can prevent similar tragedies and ensure their well-being.
