Did you know that it used to be that if you filed for divorce, you had to establish who was to blame? And we have Ronald Reagan to thank for changing that. No-fault divorce, as it’s known, means you don’t have to drag your soon-to-be ex through the public mud to get a legal split. You can—at-fault divorce is still a thing—but no-fault is far more prevalent, and preferred. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie f/k/a “Brangelina” decided to close out 2024 by finally signing off on a settlement resolving property and support issues after eight long years of a pending divorce. Alongside the divorce action, the couple also has a lawsuit in civil court about a French vineyard that they owned together, which is still pending. So, what did they even settle and why did it take eight long years? Especially since: (1) sources say that the settlement does not address custody or possession of their two minor children; (2) they were only married for two years; and (3) they had a prenuptial agreement. As to what they settled, it looks like they resolved only the financial part of their marriage (confirming separate property and awarding community property acquired during their marriage, if any, and resolving issues of whether either party would owe the other party alimony or child support). Why it took such a long time is a more difficult question to answer. Sometimes, the property at issue is worth a lengthy battle, but other times, people just get so wrapped up in the fight they can’t see their way out of it. As much as people talk about “wanting to heal,” they may seek that process through the divorce itself, which is ultimately the wrong place to look. Hopefully, 2025 will bring resolution on the rest of Brangelina’s issues so they can actually move on, because settling just one part of the litigation without the rest is like putting out a fire on the stove while the rest of the house is left to burn to the ground. #celebritydivorce #familylaw https://lnkd.in/g_sBbYdc
