OUR TOPIC TODAY: CLOSED LOOPS IN THE PACKAGING INDUSTRY ? ?Sarah, sustainability has become a critical focus in the packaging industry, but this wasn't always the case, right? ??I certainly remember when we were considered niché in this field – today, it’s impossible to ignore the impact packaging has on our environment.?Sadly now, I think the challenge is differentiating between sustainability and green-washing. ? ?Sustainability is a broad topic. What do you think are the most important factors? ?? When it comes to packaging, three key factors are crucial to me: the design and concept of the packaging, the materials used, and the ability to create a closed loop system. ? ?In terms of choosing the right materials and design, ‘Made from Recycling’ and ‘Made for Recycling’ are now well-known concepts. What do you mean by ‘packaging concept’? ?? The ‘packaging concept’ refers to the intelligent design that allows us to achieve the same functionality with less material. The innovative F-flute is a prime example of this. We need more solutions like this to reduce resource consumption, CO2 emissions, and logistics costs. ? ?Your third aspect is closed loops. Why are these so important? ?? Having packaging with great recycling potential is not enough if we don't utilise that potential. It's crucial to continually improve collection and recycling methods and take responsibility for our supply chains.?? ? ?Will AI play a role in the context of recycling and closed loops? ?? Absolutely. AI is already playing a significant role in various research projects aimed at optimising the recycling process and maximising recovery rates. Our challenge is to implement these advancements in a smart and effective way. ?
