Just before Christmas Eve, I organized a paper Christmas tree-making activity with my students. With cheerful Christmas music playing softly in the background, the classroom became a cosy, festive workshop buzzing with creativity, laughter, and teamwork. Santa decided to visit me a little early this year, and I couldn’t have asked for a better Christmas gift! A student of mine wrote to Santa and asked for me to be her teacher in her next life as well. I was blown away by the love! ??? What made this activity truly special was how beautifully it aligned with Social-Emotional Learning (#SEL) principles. As they carefully folded, cut, and decorated their paper trees: ?? Self-Awareness: Students expressed their creativity and personal style through their unique designs. ??Social Awareness: They learned about the traditions and significance of Christmas, fostering respect for diverse celebrations. ??Relationship Skills: Teamwork and sharing flourished as they helped each other with tricky folds and exchanged decoration ideas. ??Management: Patience and focus were key as they worked diligently to bring their ideas to life. ??Responsible Decision-Making: Thoughtful choices were made in designing and decorating their trees. The smiles on their faces and the joy of creating something with their own hands were the real magic of the day. Activities like these are not just about crafting; they’re about building connections, fostering emotional intelligence, and creating memories. As an educator, moments like these remind me why I love what I do. Thank you, Santa, for the early gift—a classroom filled with warmth, creativity, and the purest form of joy. Wishing everyone a season filled with peace, love, and meaningful connections. ???? Happy Teacher Appreciation Week! If you're considering ways to show appreciation for a teacher in your life, please... consider the following (queue the Bill Nye music!) ?? give gifts that are consumable ?? ask what they like (not all #teachers are Starbucks fiends ??) ?? make it about them as a person, and not them as an #Educator (I always appreciated gifts that were something I could use and enjoy outside of #school) Some of my favorite gifts that I ever got as a teacher: - Movie tickets ?? - York peppermint patties ?? - A mouse pad (One year, I complained so often about my mouse not tracking so it proves that a kid was, at least once, listening to me! #Win) ??? - I had a kid make me a coupon book one year. Things like "Good for 1 'I won't argue with you'." and I'll tell you - I really appreciated that with this kid. Probably his parent's idea, but still - spot. on. ? - Gift cards to all kinds of places ?? - Foster animal things like blankets and beds (we fostered dogs, cats, puppies, kittens, and even a rabbit when I was teaching). ?????? ?? Need some ideas? Ask your kids. They sometimes come up with really cool, off-the-wall ideas. Ask teacher-friends of your intended recipient. They often have great insider knowledge. Ask your own friends, especially ones with older kids. These people have been around the block - they know.

What Students See and Hear?(Credit, Fishtank Blog) "When students enter hallways lined with Christmas decorations, and they don’t celebrate Christmas at home, they might feel confused, insecure about their own traditions, or UNWELCOME. When the school community focuses on a single holiday, it shows students that this holiday is the most important one, that this holiday is what everyone is celebrating, and that there isn’t room for anything else in this school community. It also extends beyond just what students are seeing. There is a lot of exciting and engaging conversation around the holidays: What do you want for Christmas? Where are you going to celebrate Christmas? What are you going to cook for Christmas dinner? Let’s write letters to santa! Let’s all participate in a secret santa gift exchange! Think back to those students that aren’t celebrating Christmas when they leave your classroom. They probably aren’t sure how to participate—maybe they should just lie? What if, instead, you gave your students the opportunity to share their authentic selves, their traditions, their experiences, and their versions of the holiday season in your classroom?? It might not be feasible to include decorations from every possible type of holiday celebration, or create activities that accurately reflect every possible version of the holidays. Fortunately, there are a few easy ways you can shift your language to be broader and more inclusive of the unique students in your room.?Simple Shifts First, let’s look at what students see around the school community. Decorating your classroom doesn’t have to be off-limits to create an inclusive classroom. Instead, consider how you can focus your decorations on something less specific. Rather than a mini Christmas tree or santa hats, you could focus on snowflakes and winter-themed decorations. You can also focus on decor that uses non-denominational language like “Happy Holidays” or “Happy New Year” rather than “Merry Christmas.” Next, let’s think about the things students hear. Instead of asking students what they plan to do for Christmas, ask them what they plan to do over the winter break. This simple shift invites all students, regardless of what or how they celebrate to join the conversation.? ? However you decide to celebrate the holiday season, make sure you consider every student and how you can help each one feel welcomed, valued, and celebrated.?

WARNING: Get your tissues ready because you will need them. As we prepare for Thanksgiving this week, which is a time when we focus on gratitude and outwardly express our thankfulness, I want to share an example of why the work our teachers do matters. Oftentimes they have students who are challenging and who other teachers give up on, but there is always that one teacher who refuses to give up on that student. This video is about one of those teachers. At a time when public education is being demeaned and teachers perform a thankless job, it is important to show how their work matters, especially when they do not give up on students who may have given up on themselves. As a school communicator, I will always advocate and highlight the thankless work of teachers and other educators because the work they do truly makes a difference and shapes the future of our communities. So, as you are preparing for Thanksgiving and share everything you are grateful for in your life, please be sure to thank a teacher or someone who works in education. Happy Thanksgiving!

10.04 Two terrifying words In honor of the upcoming Halloween season, I want to share with you what I believe are the two scariest words for most people in the DePauw community to say: I’m sorry. We are a campus full of high achievers, people who have worked hard, been fortunate, and come together to keep getting better. In a place like that, surrounded by people like that, it is hard to admit when you are wrong. When you misunderstood, or didn’t think things through. When you failed to consider all of the implications, or viewpoints, or outcomes of what you believed. Or, when you stand by what you believe but expressed it in a way that hurt someone else. There are those who would tell you that you should never apologize, that to do so is somehow weak. Those people are silly. Instead, I believe that one of the true marks of a strong person is the ability to admit when they were wrong, take ownership of it, and work to make it right. I believe, too, that our commitment to freedom of expression includes (maybe relies on) our ability to own the consequences of that expression. We don’t have to agree. We do, though, have to respect each other and reckon with the impact of what we say and do. And sometimes that means saying sorry. My hope for you this week is that you continue to grow, and know that there is still more growth to come. (Each week when classes are in session I share a word of encouragement with DePauw students and families. This is this week's.)

'What if we’re burnt out not because we’re doing too much, but because we’re doing too little of what lights us up?' This hit me hard. I’ve noticed I’m unstoppable when I’m doing something that excites me—something I naturally gravitate toward. But when I’m stuck doing things that don’t align with my interests, I shut down quickly, even if I’ve tried giving it my all. Burnout isn’t always about overwork; it’s often about misalignment. As I navigate the balance between pursuing my dreams and maintaining my well-being, I ask myself this question almost weekly: What lights me up? It’s a question worth asking yourself too. Because when you figure it out, everything changes.
