It’s less than two weeks until our first Kindred Spirits Experience event and I’ve absolutely loved being super hands-on again with all aspects of building a business. In case the family resemblance didn't make it immediately obvious, the slim chiselled teen with fantastic hair and a head for heights is my Son. This isn't a LI as FB post though, there is a point here. The photo was from a climbing competition he took part is last night. Competitors get points for how high they can get up each of a series of more technically and physically challenging climbs. Points are totalled at the end of the event an winners shuffle uncomfortably on a podium whilst being handed a medal. All pretty standard competitive fair, except for one thing... What always surprises me about these events is the culture of support and improvement. There can only be one winner in each age group, but the competitors support each other with observations, feedback tips and coaching each other between each climb. There is no sense of having to "beat" the competitors or there being rival clubs. It's very much the individual competitors against the wall. (Yup... here comes the Linkedin pivot) I see this mindset more and more in business now too. In the agency space that I most work in communities like The Agency Collective | B Corp Certified, Agency Hackers, AGENCYNOMICS and others help foster supportive and collaborative relationships between businesses that would have historically seen themselves more as rivals. Outside of the formal groups, countless whatsapp groups, and informal meetups do the same on an even deeper level with like-minded leaders finding each other and sharing insight. I love it. I think there is so much to be gained and we should all be doing more of it. OK, you might find yourself up against each other in a pitch one day, but that's just you both facing the same wall. Surely it's best to be a better climber when you do?
