The $3 billion allocated for sustainable development of glaciers and mountains in Asia is a significant step forward. In Ladakh, where over approximately 20% of the region is glaciated, including the iconic Siachen Glacier—the world’s longest glacier outside the polar regions—this funding could drive impactful change. Spanning an area of approximately 60k square kilometers, Ladakh’s glacial landscapes are critical for water resources and biodiversity. Let’s see how much of this funding can be secured for Ladakh to support its unique environment and ensure the sustainable future of its fragile ecosystems. COP29 Azerbaijan

Why I Am Going to #COP29 The urgency of our current environmental crisis compels me to attend COP29. This is not just an event for me—it’s a personal mission rooted in my family’s legacy and my own commitment to creating meaningful change. My uncle, Richard Sandor, was a pivotal figure at the Rio Earth Summit alongside Maurice Strong, where he helped shape the framework for the Kyoto Protocol. He pioneered the carbon credit market, a groundbreaking concept that transformed the way we approach environmental responsibility. This market, at its core, offers a vision for environmental justice: giving ownership to those whose rights it seeks to protect, fostering livelihoods, healing ecosystems, and ultimately healing people. I am going to COP29 because this vision is more relevant than ever, and it’s time to take action. Climate change is no longer a distant threat—it’s a reality that affects every corner of the planet. Rising sea levels, extreme weather events, and the loss of biodiversity are reminders that we are running out of time. Yet, I believe that within this crisis lies an opportunity to rewrite the narrative, one that balances environmental restoration with economic empowerment. The carbon credit market my uncle envisioned is not just a tool for mitigating emissions; it’s a pathway to create sustainable jobs, empower communities, and restore ecosystems. It is about assigning value to what truly matters and ensuring that those most affected by environmental degradation are given the tools and resources to rebuild their lives. COP29 is where the world’s most pressing environmental challenges converge with the voices, ideas, and solutions that can drive change. I am attending because I know the power of speaking up and standing firm in the face of adversity. The climate crisis is not waiting for us to act—it is accelerating. And yet, the solutions are within reach. Markets like carbon trading, innovative policies, and collaborative efforts can bridge the gap between ambition and action. These mechanisms, when implemented thoughtfully, can ensure that we not only reduce emissions but also address systemic inequities that perpetuate environmental harm. For me, attending COP29 is about more than continuing a family legacy; it is about using my voice to advocate for a fairer, more sustainable future. I am inspired by the work of those who came before me, but I am also deeply aware of the responsibility that comes with it. The decisions we make today will shape the lives of future generations. I'm heading to Baku for #COP29 next week ?? On Tuesday, 12th November, I'll be moderating a session in the UN Global Compact Business Hub from 15:00-16:00: "Innovating Ambitious Business Solutions to Scope 3 Challenges." Addressing Scope 3 emissions is a tall order, but it’s vital if we’re going to achieve Net Zero goals. This panel brings together leaders who are working to navigate these complex challenges with integrity and accountability, including Malango Mughogho, Mohamed adow, Alberto Carrillo Pineda and Gilles Dufrasne. Together we’ll explore the real barriers to decarbonising Scope 3 emissions – and dig into bold solutions to overcome them.
