In our latest episode of the Impact Policy AU Podcast, I had the incredible opportunity to sit down with Kiersten Fishburn, Secretary of the NSW NSW Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure From engaging youth in policy redesign to recognising the deep roots of Aboriginal culture, this enlightening conversation covered the crucial aspects of integrated and respectful city planning among many others. Here are some key takeaways: - Youth Engagement & Representation: We emphasised the need to incorporate underrepresented voices, particularly youth, in shaping public spaces. Woolloomooloo's park redesign, inspired by youth input, is a prime example and Kierstens previous experience of youth parliaments in Liverpool as great example of voice and impact! - Respecting Aboriginal Culture: Kiersten highlighted how integrating "caring for country" into planning respects historical land use, ensuring Aboriginal communities are part of the conversation from the beginning. - Genuine Community Relationships: Building trust and authentic relationships with communities goes beyond transactional meetings. Shared storytelling and yarning can significantly enhance decision-making processes. - Economic Empowerment: Economic independence is pivotal to reconciliation.
