We’re a few hours away from D-day! We are so excited to see you at the EyeRide start line at 7:15 am tomorrow morning! Your incredible efforts have led to $43,767 in donations (and counting) for our 2024 benefactors, @balanceforblindadults and the @trailblazerstcc The weather forecast is cloudy and 25°C for the morning 65 km, Vaughn to Alliston leg. Mother Nature is testing our resilience and flexibility. The forecast for the Alliston to Collingwood leg of EyeRide is thunderstorms with heavy rain. For the safety of those riders, we are canceling the Alliston to Collingwood leg of the ride. This means EyeRide will conclude at Alliston for all riders. For those of you who were riding the 130 km ride, we understand your disappointment, but your safety is our priority. We’ll be celebrating and enjoying lunch at Alliston as EyeRide’s end point. Upon arrival at PPG Park, all riders will leave their bikes with our Bike Valets to be loaded for transport back to the start line. The bus will accommodate all riders. The bike truck and bus will depart Alliston at 1:00 pm sharp. In case of a sudden thunderstorm while cycling: 1. Seek temporary shelter. 2. Avoid taking shelter under an isolated, lone, tall object like a tree. 3. Avoid grouping together in case of a strike. 4. Cover up to stay as dry as possible. 5. Every Guide Dog handler - and Guide Dog - is different. Part of building an effective team is finding the right dog for the client. Although a team working together can look like magic, we often don't see the communication and bond between a dog and their handler. The handler will direct the dog using their orientation skills, and the dog will help their handler navigate around obstacles, stop at kerbs and locate objectives. Some dogs are better at certain aspects of these "guiding skills" than others - so part of the matching process is understanding the dog's strengths and weaknesses and pairing them with a client with a complimentary skillset. The team works together to travel safely and confidently - it's not as magic as it appears! Aboard their rowing boat the team had millions of calories worth of specially formulated dehydrated meals that would give them maximum calories. But for Rod, it was a simple pack of Tesco noodles that did it for him. ?? ? A meal he referred to as 'pure heaven'. ?? ? And whilst we now need to go and recalibrate what heaven looks like - it does highlight an important point; food aboard the boat is really important from an energy perspective - but it's also really important from a psychological perspective. ?? ? Sure, Tesco noodles are not as calorie dense as the other meals aboard - but it was a little bowl of happiness for Rod, and as he sat there, with his heavenly meal, watching the sun go down, with this three friends...that boat was a very happy place to be in deed. ?? ? As you probably remember, the team were rowing in pairs, doing 2 hour shifts, 24 hours per day. ? ? This meant that when they finished their shift they would need to clamber into the cabin, get their wet weather gear off, cook, eat, do any navigation work, send any imagery back for social media, perhaps convert some sea water into drinking water, perhaps fix anything that needed fixing, and THEN get some sleep. ?? ? This meant that under their normal shift pattern, they never got more than 90 minutes sleep at a time. ?? ? But, did you know, that when the going got tough, they needed to row three up? ??♂???♂???♀? ? In this image the crew were rowing against a strong current. The ocean looks relatively calm but the water was being pushed in the opposite direction to Antigua. This meant three of the team had to row at the same time, and that meant that they got even LESS sleep! ?? ? It's absolutely wild that they were able to continue in this manner at all, but doing it with a grin on their faces makes it all the more amazing! ?? ? “Nice Matters” … that is the tag line for Lana’s Shop, and it has never felt more true or meaningful to me. Today is both my girl’s Big-0 Birthday, so a day of celebration, and, a day of somber reflection on the world at large and of personal meditation on how to constantly BE NICE, today and every day. We stared to offer my past holiday cards as a fundraiser because people wanted them, and because there is so much need out there (last year’s fundraiser went to earthquake relief efforts in Morocco; this year, honestly, I haven’t decided because again, there is just so much to support everywhere). We usually run this in September, but you know, life happens and gets busy, so, it felt right to kickstart the holiday card sale today and run it through October. Wednesday 31st January marked the end of our Wild & Free Dip a Day Campaign 2024, where together with some strong minded members of our Wild Tribe, we dipped every day for 31 days in the sea, lakes or an ice bath to help our own wellbeing, and at the same time to raise money for our 3 amazing charities,?Pieta?Samaritans?and?AWARE NI?who will equally gain from our fundraising efforts. Wild & Free will donate ￡5 for every single dip that took place where the person posted, and then all of our wider community have all been giving what they can to ensure that we can support these wonderful charities as much as possible. We learned so much personally, as a community and as a business through our challenge that we will take into 2024: 1: We can do hard things 2: Pain and difficult feelings will pass 2: We can make new habits by making them non negotiables in our daily routines 3: The power of your tribe and community makes you unstoppable - choose wisely - and together you can hold each other accountable 4: Cold Water Immersion is like a surge of energy and dopamine that truly powers your day. 5: Cold Water immersion certainly kept sickness at bay for those who dipped daily, in a month when it was hard to avoid 6: Starting the day in nature, embracing the elements is like a mindfulness, grounding and cold water therapy session all rolled into one, so powerful - We may not keep dipping every day, but we will certainly try to dip most days, as the benefits are too significant not to. 7: Doing something for a purpose, a greater good needs to be there to keep the discipline up when the motivation is not there, which when we met Storm Isha and Jocelyn and the snow and ice, was needed, believe me.
