Since the afternoon of April 16th I've been consciously improving my eating habits. I didn't realise quite how bad they'd become until I had to get measured for a suit on the morning of April 16th. I followed the approach that I've written about in this blog post since then and have gone from 16.5st to 14.12st - losing almost 10% of my overall body weight. Here's what I did and do: First I acknowledged I have bad eating habits, what I eat is my choice, no one else's, I'm responsible for what and how I eat. Then I listed the reasons that I need to improve my eating habits; in order to be happier, healthier and a better example to my son. I started weighing myself every morning so I can track my progress. Some days I'm slightly up on the day before, others I'm down but the overall trend is that I finish my week lighter than I started it. I broke my eating habits in to component parts, primarily; the type of food I was eating and how I was eating. I was: - eating to much heavily processed foods - eating when I wasn't hungry - grazing throughout the day - eating late at night - sneaking food (it just tastes better when no one knows you've eaten it) My first step was to make better choices about the food I was eating. A clear out of the cupboards meant it was out with the crisps, Kitkats and ready meals, in with the fresh fruit and veg, seasoned meats and fish. Then I looked at how I was eating. The worse thing I was doing was eating late at night so I stopped eating after 6pm, the first few days were torture. It felt like physical pain. I was constantly walking to the fridge looking to see if any of my old favourites had magically appeared since I last looked. I took my desire to walk to and from the fridge as a hint and I started to take walks around the neighbourhood instead to fill my evenings. I viewed my days a series of choices, every time I felt I wanted to eat something I'd ask myself am I actual hungry or am I just bored, occasionally I'd have something that I knew I shouldn't but instead of just giving up and gorging, I'd accept that I'd slipped up a bit, refocus on what I'm trying to do and why and then make better choices for the rest of the day. I've been adjusting my eating and exercise on an ongoing basis so that I maintain momentum with my progress however once I started to make a few better choices and see the results, I found it easier to keep making them. A few small positive decisions snowballed into a more. Just like a bad habit is like an object in motion, so are good ones.
