Calling all teens! Our new group is coming this June! Art for Expression introduces teens to the idea of creative Expression and supports them in developing new tools for emotional regulation outside of traditional “talk therapy.” The aim is that upon completing this four-day workshop, teens will create new relationships and creative skills to improve their executive functioning and influence daily self-care practice. Art Therapy focuses on building creativity through engaging in hands-on projects for emotional regulation. Join us at Your Story Counseling June 10th -13th from 10 am - 11:15 am. ??In my research on transitional objects in children and adults and the positive (and not-so-positive) findings from both, I hadn't come across the phrase 'Evocative Object' until yesterday when I was sparked by my #frolleague Gideon Culman, MCC's post to delve a bit deeper. ?In that digging, I came across Karen Gross's (full article below) work where she shares that "#EvocativeObjects are memory preservers... ...intended to enable us to psychologically remember 'home' or a person so we can move forward." ??When people ask me what I do, I often share that I facilitate intimately emergent conversations using metaphor, meaning-making, and the power of hands-on thinking with #LEGOSERIOUSPLAY... but really what I am doing is helping them create in-the-moment evocative objects that allow them to 'remember home' so that they can also build a way forward with the same bricks. Psychologists call it #CognitiveRestructuring. Coaches call it #Reframing. And my clients call it #refrigginawesome! Tip of the Month! Discipline That Does Not Divide 1. Work the relationship rather than the nitty-gritty of the problem. Embrace the power of connection-oriented discipline to enhance communication and respect within your family. Actionable Items: ? Prioritize connection before correction. Ensure your child feels heard and understood before addressing behavioural guidance or providing any corrective feedback. ? Reflect on your child's emotions and words to show understanding, which can open the doors to more effective communication. ? Set aside regular 'listening time' where the focus is solely on understanding your child's perspective without immediate judgment or solutions. 2. The value of hearing and accepting a 'No'. Learn the developmental significance of encountering and accepting limits, fostering resilience and emotional understanding. Actionable Items: ? Normalize the experience of disappointment through gentle but firm limit-setting, helping your child build tolerance for life's inevitable 'nos.' ? Use empathetic language to acknowledge your child's feelings when faced with limits, reinforcing the bond of trust and understanding. ? Encourage expression of frustration or disappointment in safe, constructive ways, guiding your child through the process of emotional regulation. ? Stay sturdy! Try not to let your child’s disappointment, frustrations or anger shape you out of holding a limit or boundary. You are teaching them the valuable skill of tolerating frustration. In narrative therapy, the act of listening is more than just a technique—it's a profound gift. As therapist Michael White eloquently put it, "Listening is not merely a matter of hearing words; it is the creation of an understanding space where stories can unfold." By truly listening, therapists offer clients a sanctuary to share their stories, empowering them to reframe their narratives and discover new possibilities for their lives. #NarrativeTherapy #TherapeuticListening #MentalHealth #Empowerment

Connection over-correction As a therapist, one of the most effective strategies I teach parents is to focus on building a strong emotional connection with their teen before diving into behavioural issues. When you prioritise connection over correction, you create more trust that opens the door to more meaningful and effective communication. They are more likely to listen to you and accept your influence if they feel heard and connected to you. As I often say, “Prioritising connection over correction is key. When teens feel valued and understood, they’re more open to listening and engaging in meaningful dialogue.” #Parenting #MentalHealth #Communication #Relationships #Teens #Therapy #Connection
