This can be a very scary time and it can be even worse if the family member or advocate doesn't have sufficient information about the person they are representing. ?When to use 911 for EMS? Use EMS for Emergencies! This is our 5th and final part of our campaign to help inform our community and dispel some common myths. We will continue to post some of these and update any EMS myths we or our neighboring agencies may hear. #5 Myth - Insurance covers all the costs of EMS. As we frequently communicate, insurance pays less than our charge rate which we feel is reasonable compensation to support costs of supplies, ambulances, our insurance, worker's comp, wages, and benefits. ?Most insurance does not cover when we are called to provide service but the patient is not transported, like Medicare the largest insurer in our community. ?Just like you, we are feeling the squeeze of inflation but insurers are not matching that rate. ?The EMS system is only a few decades old. When originally established it was intended to be shared cost between medical insurance and tax support. We do get appropriations which we appreciate greatly! However, we get a per capita (per resident) support of $18 from our towns, when the statewide average is $29 per capita. ?We recommend you send your town elected officials your thoughts about how your local EMS is funded. ?We also hope you take a few minutes to write state and federal legislators to require government and private insurance to 1. match the rate of inflation for ambulance fees and 2. require payment for any patient service provided by EMS, including non-transport assessment and care. There are VT Legislature and US Congress tools that can help you identify and send a message. ?Here are some body system reaction related complaints from immune reactions or exposure to dangerous substances. The ones on the left may be signs of critical injuries and a reason to call 911. I was still fighting with an ambulance company after my dad had been dead for a year ... so this article caught my eye this morning. ?? ?? ?? A few things stood out to me... Knowing this geographic area, airplane (not helicopter) vs ground travel seemed peculiar because I couldn't imagine it was any faster. But I kept reading because...sick baby for crying out loud. I still have questions. The parents have a $97,000 bill and The No Surprises Act doesn't protect them because it wasn't deemed medically necessary. While they knew the family was insured, the medical facility arranged the flight without attempting to use the in-network option. And now it's against their policy to help the parents appeal Cigna's denial. ?? Most days I'm optimistic about training the next generation in our industry. But this morning, I've got a bit of a throbbing headache. In addition to everything else they're juggling, how do client service colleagues educate employees on what to do in similar situations? Can they fiercely advocate for Cigna to pay this bill and still contain the employer's costs? Navigating and negotiating claims with such a significant dollar amount requires skills outside the boundaries of traditional client service. I don't see evidence that the frequency of similar claims will decrease, so firms need to think about how they'll respond when it happens to one of their clients. Thoughts on this? Unfortunately, articles and local news features like these are becoming more common around the country, not just with Air Ambulance, but with Ground Ambulance claims as well. It’s a complex issue, and, regretfully, despite good intentions of the No Surprise Act, we are seeing substantial delays in the IDR process for Air claims which has led to cash flow constraints causing some Air providers to discontinue service in several markets, or worse, going bankrupt (as was the case with the #2 provider in the country last October). We are also seeing increases in denied claims and increasing average cost of Ground claims as more demand gets placed on Ground providers traveling longer distances to fill in the gaps of Air coverage. The list of downstream effects goes on, but the net impact is more uncertainty and costly financial impact to EEs and their families. MASA can help.
