From 5pm tonight I will be out on the streets for the #CEOSleepout Why do I care so much about this cause? 1. Every night, roughly 1 in 200 Australians find themselves without a safe, secure or affordable place to sleep. 2. One third of people experience homelessness in Australia are under 18 years old. 3. 1 in 2 people experiencing homelessness are women. 4. Only 6% of people experiencing homelessness are sleeping 'rough' 5. Majority of people experiencing homelessness are the 'hidden homeless'; couch surfing, sleeping in cars, living in overcrowded dwellings, caravans, motels.... 6. Many people who experience homelessness do in fact 'have a job' and are escaping domestic violence, lack of rental afforability and cost of living. 7. The experience of homelessness can have significant effects on an individual's self confidence, mental health, emotional wellbeing and relationships. 8. Homelessness does not discriminate: Homelessness in Australia is caused by domestic and family violence, sudden life triggers such as job loss, illness or the loss of a loved one, or the lack of affordable and social housing.

I was shocked when I saw the advert regarding an OEM's 9-11 Campaign at an upcoming Print industry event whose dates coincide with the anniversary of the 9-11 tragedy. When do good intentions become self-promoting insanity? Who in the leadership of this OEM allowed this absolutely insane idea to become a reality? So, after reading the OEM press release describing their 9-11 Campaign. Here's my thinking. Initially, I was hopeful that a printer OEM was going to support some great causes. However, my optimism quickly turned to disappointment as I read their press release. The focus shifted from honoring fallen heroes to promoting print equipment to those who came to mourn. I ask this of the OEM: Wouldn’t having experts on hand regarding the cause and leaving the product experts doing demos out of the equation and the press release be less about you and more about the causes? Will these print experts run up to the fallen heroes, friends, and family and say sorry for your loss, or will they go into sales mode and explain the latest features on the print machine and remind them of the show-only special pricing? Obviously, this OEMs good intentions were not thought out, and unfortunately, for years, our industry has had folks who have made careers out of exploiting the veterans, the sick, and those who need charity and support. In closing: Remember, Charity is not about benefiting you. It's about sacrificing something for the benefits of others. Ray Stasieczko? ?
