A Success Story: From Foster Care to Independence We want to share the inspiring journey of Jordan, a former foster youth who has transformed their life against all odds. After moving through several foster homes, Jordan faced the daunting challenges of aging out of the system with little support. But with determination and the right resources, they turned their life around. Thanks to organizations like Youth Empowerment Success Services Inc. (YESS), Jordan found the support they needed. We provided housing assistance, life skills training, and mentorship, helping them build a stable foundation for their future. Today, Jordan is thriving, pursuing their education and securing stable employment. Their story is a testament to the transformative power of support and resources, highlighting the critical role that YESS plays in empowering young individuals as they transition to independence. Together, we can ensure that more foster youth achieve their dreams and build a brighter future! ?? More than 30 percent of youth and families in our program are – or have been – involved in foster care. Our Friends work hard to make sure that youth in foster care – or youth at-risk of care - and their caregivers have their needs met. Friends average five contacts each month with caregivers and facilitate connection to concrete resources in times of need. 92% of caregivers in our program report that Friends connected them to resources that stabilized their families. #PutChildrenFirst #FosterOurFuture

Innovation in child and family services is largely being driven today by the growing complexity of needs of those served, the challenges in recruiting and retaining foster caregivers, the funding challenges that exist to support demand for service, and the desire to shift systems to become more preventative. One such innovation recently launched in Canada is the implementation of Mockingbird Family in Nova Scotia. As the first government in Canada (and one of the first sub-national governments around the world), the Province of Nova Scotia made a significant investment in using Mockingbird Family to support changes to its foster care program. It joined the international Mockingbird Family network, already established in the USA, Australia, UK, Japan, Netherlands and several other countries, and is serving as an example for other provinces in Canada to follow suit. If you don’t know much about Mockingbird Family, in its simplest form it is a micro-community approach that organizes children, youth and foster caregivers into Constellations, with an experienced Hub Home foster caregiver at the centre who supports the foster caregivers in their role caring for children and youth, and acts as another resource for children and youth in care. It provides more support to foster caregiver who are often dealing with burnout and other impacts from the complexity of child and youth trauma. While the benefits of Mockingbird Family’s implementation in Nova Scotia are still being measured, a past evaluation in the UK showed the approach works: through more engaged and supported foster caregivers (leading to their retention), more engaged children and youth (including an improvement in their sense of belonging), and the reduction in placement breakdowns. Will be great to see how this approach starts to get adapted and rolled out further across Canada. #childwelfare #childandfamilyservices #innovation #mockingbirdfamily #fostercare #childrenandyouth

In Honor of National Foster Care Month, we would like to spotlight our Extended Foster Care Unit: Extended foster care under AB12 provides an array of resources for non-minor dependents or extended foster care youth between the ages of 18 and 21 who would otherwise age out of services without any further assistance. Probation officers who supervise these youth provide more than just case management and supervision. The goal of AB 12 is to ensure youth leave foster care with the practical skills to achieve their potential and succeed in life. The initiative focuses on providing a safety net of financial assistance, services and ongoing support to these young adults as they age out of foster care. #engagingyouth #BuildingSupport #strengtheningopportunities #fosteryouth #SupportingPositiveChange
