BTS Story- RAGER AT A MANSION IN DAYTON Anyone who’s been involved in commercial or film production knows what can go down when planning/shooting a project.?Every crew member has stories.?Some funny, some sad, some scary.?Some suitable for public consumption, others…. not so much.?This is one of them…… Relationships are everything.?Happy client & crew = Happy production company.? ? A great location can make a shoot.?It’s the aesthetic that drives the production. ? When you find the perfect location that doubles as a wonderful client & crew experience…winner?winner,?chicken dinner. ? While scouting for a locale that could act as a?therapist’s?office…?we found the former home of Governor James M. Cox?– a?sprawling?5-acre estate that welcomed Presidents FDR, Woodrow?Wilson?and Harry Truman as guests.?It had a gorgeous library that was perfect for the look and feel we were hoping to achieve.?The stately room was lined with mahogany bookshelves and large floor to ceiling windows.?We instantly knew it was our spot to shoot the TV campaign.? ? What it became…?was so much more.? ? With 15,000+ square feet of living space, 9 bedrooms and an in-ground pool, the house became Yellowhaus Central for the 3-day shoot.?Talent and crew stayed in the bedrooms to minimize travel?and our client?(a regional credit union)?took over the massive living room, which doubled as video village.?Craft services used the commercial kitchen to continually deliver scrumptious?meals and?snacks which kept us all going throughout the long days.? ? The “relationship” part was solidified each night after we wrapped. Old Fashions enjoyed in the lounge.?Cabernet poured in the kitchen.?Pilsners by the pool.?It was a wonderful mix of people, working hard during the day and reveling in each other’s company at night.?It’s why we started Yellowhaus.?And it was an experience none of us will soon forget.? ? And producer’s note…?.it was all done through?AirBnB.?Don’t sleep on that app as a location resource.?

Through an agent specialising in “perfect locations in Paris” I hired an expensive apartment on the Champs-élysées for a beauty shoot commission, an important one. Every commission is! It was in a beautiful old building that was once a hotel and had been converted into private apartments. I got there a day ahead of the shoot in order to prepare for the gig, I always do if I can. Once inside I was more than a bit shocked, and not just from being fleeced by the cab driver from the airport. The apartment I’d rented wasn’t the size in the description. It was actually just a small ex-hotel room. To make it look bigger the owner had just fixed a wall to wall, floor to ceiling mirror to the main wall. The fridge in the kitchenette didn’t work but that was ok because there wasn’t any power at all in the whole building! No reason or explanation, just no power. I called the letting agent for some urgent help. Her answer, “Ah yes, but no problem, you are on the Champs-élysées!” and put the ‘phone down… Fortunately my computer has an amazing battery and my cameras will shoot and soot on internal power, plus I have back up power for the cameras. But! Now power for my lights. Reflections everywhere. No room for a tripods or stands. An agent that doesn’t give a monkeys. No time to cancel the models. An expectant heigh profile client with a deadline. My reputation about to be questioned. Warm beer. What to do? Give up and go home? OR time to roll my sleeves up, lean on my experience and make the most of it! There’s loads of takeaways from this story and writing these posts for LinkedIn got me thinking about this project. Here’s three of my thoughts, please feel free to add yours. 1 Preproduction is really important and I thought the prep went well when actually it could have been better. 2 If it hits the fan, don’t just pack it in. You’ve got skills, use them. That’s what you’re hired for. You’ve got this! 3 Warm French beer is an atrocious act, soon to be avenged! Anyway, here’s one of the results we came up with. How did we do? Kudos to the other creatives that worked so hard to make this project work.

?? Need cost-effective shoot locations? Don't sacrifice visual appeal! ?? Sometimes, we feel stuck when trying to find the perfect location for a project without breaking the budget. But here’s a thought: limitations often fuel creativity. Instead of focusing on the lack, ask yourself: What hidden gems can I uncover? ?? ??Think local: Community centers, parks, or small businesses might be willing to lend their space at a fraction of the cost—or even for free. ??Reuse with a twist: Redecorate or change angles. One location can serve multiple scenes if you’re creative with staging. ??Go digital: Virtual backdrops and green screens can give you the flexibility to craft any environment without leaving your studio. Challenge yourself to see every constraint as a door to innovation. Your vision is what brings magic to the screen, not necessarily the cost of the location. ?? How do you find budget-friendly shoot locations? Drop your tips below! ?? #CreativeSolutions #Filmmaking #BudgetTips #VisualStorytelling #KeepCreating

GAUGING INTEREST... ?? ?? Off the back of the studio launch, it's time to start putting some ideas out there... One of the reasons for making this space is because of the lack of other creative facilities in the area. The word networking is a bit... yeah... we're still working on the name. My aim is for this to be a bit more of a collaborative space where you can meet and get to know others in the creative space - COMMUNITY OVER COMPETITION ?? I'm a firm believer that there's far more to gain by working with others. Plenty of ideas of how this could run, but interested to hear people's thought and comments on this... ? What day of the week? ? What time? (obviously evening, no creative does early mornings) ? Price? ? Benefits? - looking at possible 'subscriptions' that covers the monthly event + discounted rates on studio hire. Let me know in the comments, would you come if we did a pilot; what would you want to see from the events? #creativestudio #photostudio #networking

World-building as a branding practice: "Whenever a real brand appears in entertainment products, specifically in film, television series, and video games, there are two possible scenarios: product placement and creative choice." https://lnkd.in/dkwZvG2Q
