Consistency is king.. ..when it comes to making progress towards your goals. Towards the end of our Atlantic row, it would have been really easy to get complacent, and start cutting corners because it felt like the end was in sight - we'd 'nearly done it'. But we knew that anything could happen in those last few days, so we had to stay focused on eat, sleep, row, repeat, stay vigilant and stick to the processes and safety procedures we'd used throughout, to make sure we did reach the finish line in Antigua safely. What do you do when your eyes pop open at 3:am? Well, sure maybe you get up to use the bathroom, but then what? No matter what time I got to bed, I always wake-up around 3:am.. I used to toss and turn and think a lot about how I'm never going to get back to sleep. But not anymore. Here's what I do to fall back asleep. And it works 90% of the time: 1. no clocks in my bedroom and my phone stays upside down on the nightstand. 2. say a silent mantra to myself, "Out of your mind, and into your body." 3. begin a steady pattern of deep mindful belly breathing. 4. shift to 4-7-8 breathing (inhale for count of 4, hold for count of 7 and then exhale for a count of 8 - 4 cycles through) 5. think of my beach sensory memories - sights, smells, sounds, feels, tastes) I usually fall back asleep way before I hit the beach. Routines vs. Rituals. My wife prompted a discussion about rituals- asking me what mine were. It got me thinking about what rituals are vs. routines. I have loads of routines and habits, many are adaptive to the day, work schedule, family needs. But what differentiates rituals? Through our chat, she pointed out how many rituals we take on are grounding. They set us on the path- and we can feel disoriented, unsettled, without them. A big takeaway for me was that rituals serve you. They feed you. And for them to be of more value and service to you, they require intention. Exercise is more meaningful when you recognize how it makes you feel and what it does for you. How you GET to do it. Eating is more meaningful when you haven’t been mindlessly snacking all day or scarfing on the go. When you have truly nourishing, delicious food with people you care about and gratitude as an appetizer. And my morning routines.. which include body weight exercises while I wait for my coffee is getting an upgrade as I step outside, breath the fresh air and sip on said coffee as I map out my day and intentions.
