Is it me or is striking that COP29 began on 11/11—a date so often associated with alignment and intention. Maybe this collective energy will resonate through the negotiations, softening hearts and pushing power dynamics towards a more just and people-centered outcome.
With numerology and day 1 now behind us, let’s remain focused on the broader challenges that shadow COP events. Among the most pressing: the escalating repression of climate activists, human rights defenders, and those who challenge their governments.
Today, with partners @publishwhatyoupay @Global Campaign to Demand Climate Justice (DCJ) Climate Action Network International released this important report titled Climate Talks and the Chilling Effect: Repression on the Rise, to keep these issues on the agenda. This report details the rising barriers faced by civil society: surveillance, intimidation, restrictive laws, and police brutality—all of which are increasingly prevalent at global climate negotiations. It’s critical that we keep this conversation alive as we push for a more inclusive, just climate action agenda at COP29 and beyond.
